Apple iPad

Quote from nitro:

A computer is anything whose primary purpose is to process and display general information. So a stove with a chip in it is not a computer, nor is a car engine with a computer system supporting it, nor is a digital clock. But an iPad is a computer. That it is called an "iPad" is a marketing ploy.
In this case iPhone is a computer too... as well as many of the iPods or blackberry.

Yep. An iPhone is a computer that also allows you to make phone calls. It is simplified because transforming spoken language into digital form is very simple. That it is called a phone is a marketing ploy and the packaging. No matter how you package a stove, it is still a stove.

If you want to go to an extreme, everything is a computer since the current understanding of the universe is that the basic bit of reality is not energy or matter, but information.

If you add a worktop to a stove some start calling it "a kitchen." I guess it's a marketing ploy too.

How do you know? lol

How do I know what? We don't know what the ultimate reality is. That is why I said it is our current understanding.

I guess traders come from various backgrounds. Some come from nuclear physics...
Nuclear physics deals with nucleons, i.e. protons and neutrons and electrons. Subnuclear physics deals with gluons, quarks etc. The energies needed to understand what I am talking about are far far faaaaar beyond even subnuclear physics. But let's get this thread back on topic.

Dat's what I'm talkin bout.....

Now...About this Apple iPad.....

Are these statements true, partly true, or incorrect?:

1. It uses flash memory, so it doesn't have a hard drive.

2. You can't download java onto an iPad.

3. If your battery runs down, you can plug it into the wall outlet and still be on the internet.

4. There are no real time charting capabilities for a trader to use on the iPad.

5. AT&T (vomit) is the only way to get on a 3g network at the current time.

6. Have you used the iPad with WiFi? Does it work well this way?

7. Is there a maker who is soon to put out a tablet that has the Windows 7 OS, such that the device would be more similar to a laptop?

8. You cannot connect a printer to the iPad.

9. Can the screen be viewed outside or do you see the screen much better indoors?

10. If you have an iPad, how is it protected on the internet? Do you download an antivirus program onto the iPad?

11. What about these "apps"? I don't have a smart phone, so I'm not hip to this biz. Does an app mean you have to get one for each website? Are they free?

(I'm sure none of you want me to work on your computer, do you??)

My biggest disappointment is probably something that was not possible: I wanted this to be essentially a Mac OS X machine with an INTC processor so I don't need a laptop. I don't want both a Mac Laptop and an iPad.

This is basically a giant iPhone. Not that impressed.
And the screen isn't as good as on iPhone 4 either.

Quote from nitro:

Why didn't AAPL use an INTC Atom processor on the iPad just like the product in your link, making it AFAIK compatible with both MSFT Windows and Mac OS X???
It's all about battery life. As it is, it's already way too heavy to be used as a book/magazine replacement.

Think HTC Desre (recent Android phone). It has bright screen, proper multitasking... and with a few aps running in the background it barely touches 6-hour battery life according to some reviews.

Quote from traderNik:

Anyone who argues that the iPad isn't a strong indicator of where personal computing is going hasn't played with one.
Well, it's not first in its class and certainly not the last one. Remember tablet PCs? Kindle?

Quote from DannoXYZ:

However, I do use the iPad for remote-access to my regular trading desktop via VNC. Pretty convenient to sit out in the garden or at the beach and get to my system.
Do you use RealVCN? How is it on iPad?

Quote from Pension_Admin:

They also brand themselves to be a cool company, which is an excellent marketing strategy that indirectly make the PC users "uncool".
Does anyone remember ads "I am a Mac. And I am a PC"? Now "I am a PC" is a Microsoft slogan.
