I am 49 and swim about 10km a week plus occasional runs.
That keeps me in good shape but you have to swim at a hard pace, preferably sets.
Note: I see guys who are my age who have been going to the pool for years but they are still overweight. They basically paddle up and down for 40 minutes and think that is a workout.
