The same way death occurs with gunshots to any part of the body (sans CNS destruction), whether the chest, guts, or extremities like the arms and legs; hemorrhage. Hemorrhage is, in addition to being difficult to spell, when blood leaves the the body from an artery, vein, or capillary. In short, it is bleeding.
