another supplement bites the dust. fish oil pills are a waste of money:

Quote from Fah Q:

i agree with most of this, just saying one study does not make this true for this supplement.

i do not use this pill myself. i eat a lot of salmon!!

i do too. we eat fish(usually salmon) 3-4 times a week. not much better than grilled salmon on a bed of brown rice with a nice helping of baked or steamed veggies on the side.

you wont need that ...

I didn't need it, I just noted it as a sideeffect. I actually had to give one of them up, because I was shitting too much. I mean 3-4 times in a few hours is more than I desire..

From the article: "diets high in fatty fish such as salmon, sardines, mackerel and others had lower rates of heart disease."

McDonalds filet o fish = Pollock or Hoki, plus other added ingredients.

-----------------------

Going back to the core of the article, it does say that eating fish seems to help, so the solution would be to find the best artifical suppliment, because not everybody can efford fish 3-4 times a week and it is easier to pop pills.

I am sure there are already perfect substitutes on the market. The study quoted 20+ years old tests, the suppliment industry improved a lot since.

Summary: advantage of fish oil:

-anti inflammatory
-blood thinner
-joint relief
-constipation relief
-tryglicerid lowering (possible cardio advantage)

Reading the responses on the USA today website, someone pointed out:

"There is already a prescription strength Omega 3 drug. It's called Lovaza."

Made by GSK. So if fish oil doesn't do zilch for cardio vascular health, why big pharma is making a prescription drug from it?

Or could it be that there is a conflict of interest between big pharma and the supplement industry? Of course, since supplements are cheap and over the counter.

So fish oil is either does work against heart attack, or big pharma is selling you the same placebo shit for a much higher price....

P.S.: At least 3 of the responders said their doctors advised them to take fish oil. :)

Quote from Pekelo:

Here is another advantage of fish oil, if you like to be regular. It oils up your inside system so well, that you will have no problem of going to the bathroom.'

If you have constipation, just add turmeric, and you will be unplugged, or so I heard. :)
vit c overdose will clean you out as well , no known lethal dose and good for you too.

I know. Probably a vitamin C, turmeric, fish oil combo would unplug the dead... :)

I was taking turmeric as an anti-inflammatory and joint help for back pain and fish oil for joint and trygs, not for constipation...

sure its easier to pop pills. the problem is that science is coming around to the conclusion that getting the nutrient through a pill is not the same as getting it naturally. the body doesnt process it the same way. it usually just passes it.

lol. is this a serious question.

I don't have a problem with pills. Most of the time it is cheaper and way faster than the real thing. Try vitamin C from fruits or a pill. fruits are freaking expensive nowadays...

The real question is, just how big of a difference does it make? If the difference is only 10-20%, most people still will stick to pills.

OK, let's look at fish oil. One month supply can be around $8. Now try this with eating fish a few times a week for a month (not counting the time it takes) and you would go over $50 easily. That is a huge difference for most people....

P..: Unrelated, but my general approach to life is, everything with moderation. Eat a little this, drink a little that, and of course exercise, and you should be OK.

(Or I will ask Keith Richard what he has been taking. Ozzy was actually tested for his DNA, how he was able to survive so much abuse to his body.)
