Another Obamacare horror story debunked

Quote from PiggyBank:

im not a 100% sure but since my coverage is also being dropped i have a packet for obamacare plans through BCBS. At the age of 60, the absolute lowest bronze level premium is 449.62, the cheapest silver level premium is 580.17. all have a max oop of 6350, exactly the same as in the article. but according to this bs artist author the cost is lower cause she qualifies for a subsidy.
With the subsidies, at the level of the USA medium income the cost of insurance is close to current market rates.

If you notice in the news stories the complaints are coming from people who earn more and get less subsidy.

If you earn more the 95k and get no subsidy you pay full over inflated cost.
This whole program is just a surcharge on the wealthy disguised as insurance.

It's not "disguised as insurance" if claims are made and the service is provided, it is insurance.

With all benefits being equal the unsubsidized obamacare consumer is paying way over the market price.

Is it fair to force a wealthy person to pay double for the same PRIVATE SECTOR service a middle class person would pay?

It's a different market now, by several million people, so naturally the price is going to change. Is it fair? Without looking at the subsidy schedule I can't say (I mean, what's "wealthy" in your view?), but in principle(s) it may well be fair.

Her current plan, from Anthem Blue Cross, is a catastrophic coverage plan for which she pays $293 a month as an individual policyholder. It requires her to pay a deductible of $5,000 a year and limits her out-of-pocket costs to $8,500 a year. Her plan also limits her to two doctor visits a year, for which she shoulders a copay of $40 each. After that, she pays the whole cost of subsequent visits.

This fits the very definition of a nonconforming plan under Obamacare. The deductible and out-of-pocket maximums are too high, the provisions for doctor visits too skimpy.

As for a replacement plan, she says she was quoted $478 a month by her insurance broker.

The sad truth is that the republican mind still exists.

$478 > $293. In fact it's 63% HIGHER. Premiums would be $2220 MORE per year.

Did you ever think that there are people in this country who want catastrophic policies? Have you considered there are people who are fit & healthy and not in the 67% who are overweight or obese? I'm one of them. I don't go to the doctor except for an annual physical. So why do I care about supposed "skimpy" provisions for doctors visits (that I'd not use)? Who is this asshole to decide that my deductible is too high? My wife and I have NEVER come close to reaching our deductible of $10K/year. The most we ever paid in a year was $2500 when she had some minor surgery.

You're clearly an uneducated person when it comes to health insurance and health care. I've paid my own way 18+ years and have forgotten more about these matters than your feeble mind could ever comprehend.

And who the fuck you think is paying the difference? The magical health care fairy? I can't believe your parents were allowed to breed.

Maybe you're "skinny fat". Let's see your blood work results.

Uhh, I run 6 days/week. Weigh 2 pounds more than I did when I got my undergrad degree in 1975. So 6'2", 172 isn't anything I might apologize for. I'm healthier than most people 20+ years younger. I've had 2 doctors in the past 2 decades say "I'd be out of business if all my patients were like you".

But I get to subsidize the slobs in the US who CHOOSE to eat like pigs, who CHOOSE to not exercise and who CHOOSE to develop pre-existing conditions. I'm excluding those who have real pre-existing conditions.

Want a good laugh? Go to a shopping center, or a Wal-Mart, or a restaurant, especially a place that has "all you can eat" crap. Just observe the people there. You see extremely overweight and obese people at all of the above places. Some who ride around stores in scooters because they can't even walk due to their excessive weight.
