The dems will play games but Mitch plays a mean game himself.

A quorum is required to hold a vote and -it varies from committee to committee but to hear sworn testimony- usually a smaller subset are allowed to hear sworn testimony too.

A quorum however is not required to begin a hearing. And in instances where a quorum is required to hear sworn testimony they can get the witness to testify and then swear to the truthfulness of the previous testimony when they have quorum, and other tactics.

The point being that - contrary to what Schumer and company are arguing- Mitch can still go forward even without a quorum as long as he can get a quorum by the end of the month at some point when votes are required. He can also hold all sorts of virtual hearings with Amy Barrett and Senators such that the Senators continue to establish her record and so that when the time comes they can say that they are sufficiently informed to vote and if the dems did not want to participate, well frig em then, they had their chance. He would not be getting into any senate rule problems unless he was trying to do voting remote. And in other procedures he would get into trouble trying to subpoena witnesses but that does not apply where the nominee is and will voluntarily appear for information background hearings.

I dont want to get too far into the weeds, but I dont want anyone thinking that this quorum thing- will stop the process. It won't. It will have to be dealt with at the end of the month if they want to vote before the election but don't count on there not being a quorum just because one may be lacking at one point in time- or not. Full speed ahead. And if they do the vote right after the election, that could be okay too. Not the first choice but definitely a nice option too. Works even if Trump loses.

None of us are naive though. I did not say that they cannot come up with dirt. Just saying they will have to create it as they did for Kavanaugh. When I say "her", I am referring of course to Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett. Just thought I would clarify that a bit.

As long as the FBI background check is still going on they are still in good shape. That is an area where the pubs would get into trouble if they ever tried to expedite things and go without a full FBI check. That would not be good. Of course it is just an update from her 2017 investigation so that gets them pretty far along from the get-go.

I have not read around so cannot comment but watch out for the "small print" when Mitch speaks. Did he say "legislative work" or "senate work." You might be surprised at how some functions that are not classified as "legislative" still move forward. We shall see.

One by one, President Donald Trump and a series of GOP lawmakers have fallen ill with the virus that has killed more than 208,000 Americans.

Over the last week, many of the politicians who tested positive attended events at which few people wore masks and mingled in the halls and tunnels of the Capitol complex.

Seems about right during a confirmed Covid outbreak. Set a good example for the dummies like you to go maskless, ignore medical advice unless until you are hospitalized, mock those taking appropriate safety measures, set up crowded events. Trump dared Covid to find him and it did. Spread to quite a few of his inner circle as well; some of the deniers in office aren't having a good week. I guess we won't be seeing some of these clowns making public announcements about Covid anymore.

Mostly true in regard to the final confirmation votes.

For procedural matters to keep the process going and the informational hearings leading up to it, it is less clear. Mostly not a problem in the lead up on procedural matters. They have more leeway to keep things moving as long as there is a quorum at the time of the final vote. Just as an aside, which may be relevant at some point, a covid-stricken senator appearing isolated off in the gallery still counts toward the quorum.
