Yes realtors built it ...it is theirs to use ... no controversy there ....
However there is IMHO anticompetitive behaviour associated with the realtor contracts that usually state that you can not list your house on any other service if you want to list it in the MLS. This type of behaviour and agents refusing to show or acknowledge to buyers any property not in the MLS is where the ant-competitive complaints stem from .....
I think that it really is very easy to sell any type of SFH property without the use of a realtor with equal or in most cases better results and as time goes on the MLS will continue to be supplanted by other listing services .....
and by the way, there is very little difficulty is selling most property - even marginal ones - in any type of market if you know where to look .... In most cases IMHO realtors do very very little (even the best ones).
