So again, it is an Auditor's job to know. Yet you have tons of Madoff's who were so deceptive that they got away with lying and cheating until they could not anymore. Are you telling the widow of the investor who was bankrupted and committed suicide that it was his fault and that he was culpable? You can do a reasonably good job at monitoring and researching but at some point the realized cost of going further would not justify the benefits anymore. I think ECB and EU did what they could do (and again I am sure they could have done a bit better, in retrospect anyone can do better). But they did a reasonably ok job, but again criminal activity is very hard to catch outright. Well its all open book now, but after the fact.

Anyone can cheat anyone else. But if I'm the EU, and I'm admitting a country, either one of two things is true:

1. They knew, and they were culpable.

2. They didn't know, and they should have known because it was their job to know.

Fault exists, either way.

Yes, actually that's what I'm saying. If you are a widow of an investor who was bankrupted, it is partially the guy who killed himself who is at fault. That's why everyone puts that "Do your Due Diligence Before Investing" clause on everything. Does that mean it's not the fault of the fraudster? Of course not. Those people should go to jail, or be kicked out of the EU (in the case of the Greeks). Why weren't they? Once the fraud was discovered, why didn't they punish the Greeks?

It was the ECB's job to know. I believe they did. You claim that they did not. If that is the case, then either prove it or accept that it is just your opinion.

Even if you are correct, then the ECB is guilty of negligence and not fraud.

Yes. There is some fault to be dealt to the investor of Maddof because they never questioned the returns they were getting or did further due diligence.

As for why the ECB would ignore the Greek's numbers, this has to do with the political aspiration of a united European Union.
