There are many different groups in fla attempting to get investors or subsidies from the govt to build factories that can produce ethanol from sugar.


the bubble price of land made it a tough propostion but now that land is cheaper perhaps these guys will get their business off the ground.
 
Libertad: The Caribbean countries...Brazil...and the US have an excellent opportunity before them by creating ethanol from sugar cane ....

…Thus the money that makes up as much as 30% of some of their GDPs leaves because of oil...This money could stay...The electrical production from cane baggase...and the energy independence could become a reality for some of them....and relatively quickly....

SouthAmerica: Brazil is already doing it. There are another 50 ethanol production facilities under construction in Brazil, and they have over 350 ethanol production facilities operating.

These over 400 ethanol production facilities will be creating a lot more electrical power than they need for the production of ethanol, and the extra electrical power is being sold to the Brazilian electrical power grid – and millions of Brazilians are getting their electrical power as an extra benefit from the process of ethanol production.

It is a win-win strategy for Brazil.

I don’t know which part of the Brazilian ethanol production process it is too hard for Americans to grasp.

If Americans had grasped how the Brazilian system works then they would not be using corn as the raw material on the production of ethanol in the United States.

Never mind that ethanol produced from corn also affects the food chain costs in turn helping to increase inflationary pressure in the USA.


Regarding Al Gore’s chances in the 2008 presidential election:

What I meant to say about Brazil is that they are also in a win win situation in that they could simply expand their territory and business by making joint agreements with the other Caribbean governments and related companies....

The sugar business was moving well in the 1940s...50s...however now you will see rusted out plants....and stranded migrant workers working the remnants of what used to be....

Organizing who gets what in these smaller countries is a nightmare with regards to who gets what etc...

Some of them are already talking to Brazil...even the ex agricultural head is involved....

But make no mistake the poorer Caribbean countries are sitting on an economic windfall if they will just get their acts together and develop it.....

SouthAmerica: Reply to Jem

Before they start turning sugar from Florida into ethanol the US government should take a good look in the broad picture.

Ethanol produced from sugar cane from Florida may not be a good idea, because the sugar production industry in the United States it is protected by quotas in turn making the price of sugar in the US double the price of sugar in the world market.

If they start making ethanol from sugar cane from Florida that would increase the price of sugar in the US even further and that increase would start showing as inflation in the price of foodstuff.

Unless the United States changes the rules regarding the amount of sugar cane that can enter the United States then a better choice would be to grow sugar cane in the Caribbean islands and produce the ethanol in the Caribbean then bring it to the United States.

And as you mentioned there are various benefits to the United States if they adopt that strategy including: 1) the price of land it is much cheaper in the Caribbean islands than in Florida, 2) The labor costs also are much cheaper since places like Haiti has 80 percent unemployment right now, 3) If these Caribbean economies start prospering then the local people would stay on their islands instead of trying to move to the United States illegally, 4) When these Caribbean islands start prospering they also create new markets for other American goods.

By the way, ethanol produced from corn would not be viable in the United States without very large US government subsidies.

Ethanol from sugar cane it is the way to go and another benefit to the Caribbean islands is that by producing ethanol in large quantities as another benefit they can cut on their imports of oil since they would be able to produce a large amount of electric power during the ethanol production process as they are doing today in Brazil.

And I have not mentioned yet another benefit – under such a new system the United States would recoup some of the prestige that the United States has lost all over Central America.

Why?

Because in that case the United States would be providing jobs and economic prosperity to many of these Caribbean island instead of guns and death as it is the case with Colombia today.

Today the US provides helicopters, all kinds or armaments and poisons to the Colombian government – the armament helps to kill a lot of people, and the poisons are dropped from the airplanes and destroy not only the drug crops but also the food supply and also make the farmers sick with cancer and other diseases – hardly a way to make friends in the area, and ethanol strategy also would help recoup the clout that the US used to have in that part of the world.

Just a reminder: Colombia showed up on the US radar only a few years ago when they found large amounts of oil in the Amazon jungle.

SouthAmerica: Today we have a lot of television cable channels, and these people operates 24/7 and they need material to keep the people interested on their shows.

Most people are getting already tired of all the hoopla about Hillary and Obama – That is good and that will get them out of the way by the time when Al Gore announces that he is a candidate for the 2008 presidential race.

Most talking heads on television just try to make the conversation interesting by raising the possibility of the first woman US president or the first black man. That would be a nice experiment Blah, blah, blah….

Now when we have to face the reality of complete chaos in the Middle East, and 8 years of an American administration that trashed US clout, prestige and turned the United States into a country that the entire world despises.

The 2008 US presidential election it will not be only about US domestic issues and if Americans can elect the first woman or first black man – the 2008 election will be about electing a US president that can do things in the international arena in a positive way to try to recoup some of the clout and prestige that the United States used to have around the world.

Al Gore has been traveling around the world giving his presentation and showing his film about “Global Warming” – People from around the world has a high regard and respect of Al Gore. Besides his name is associated with the administration of Bill Clinton and a time when the United States prestige around the world reached its highest point in a long time.

I know that we can’t count on the American people having common sense – otherwise how can we explain the re-election of George W. Bush – but the Bush/Cheney and their gang have done so much damage to the United States domestically, and internationally – that this time around only the real jackasses would not recognize that the United States needs someone with the global clout of “Al Gore” to be the next president of the United States.

In the US presidential election of 2008 the American people will need to consider the big picture and when they do that there are only two names that comes to mind to restore United States prestige around the world: "Bill Clinton and Al Gore."

For once I agree with you. The sugar quota is possibly the most wrong-headed policy we have. Congress forces all of us to pay above-market prices for sugar, all to benefit a family in florida that grows it on environmentally sensitive land using illegal haitian labor. They do have excellent lobbyists and know where to spread their money, as do the ethanol crowd, led by corporate welfare queen ADM.

Brende said he joined political opponent Heidi Soerensen of the Socialist Left Party to nominate Gore as well as Canadian Inuit activist Sheila Watt-Cloutier before the nomination deadline expired Thursday.

"Al Gore, like no other, has put climate change on the agenda. Gore uses his position to get politicians to understand, while Sheila works from the ground up," Brende said.

During eight years as Bill Clinton's vice president, Gore pushed for climate measures, including for the Kyoto Treaty. Since leaving office in 2001 he has campaigned worldwide, including with his Oscar-nominated documentary on climate change called "An Inconvenient Truth."

Norwegian lawmakers are among the thousands of people and groups with rights to nominate Nobel candidates.

Others include members of national governments, past laureates, members of the awards committee and its staff, and many university professors.

The winner is traditionally announced in mid-October, with the prize always presented on the Dec. 10 anniversary of the death of its creator, Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel.

Saw another poll the other day. Gore had only about 4% of the Democratic vote.

I guess that would definitely give him incentive to enter the race!

SouthAmerica: “Perfect timing” in most cases is the key and the difference in people being able to accomplish a certain goal in life or not.

In the year 2000 Al Gore was able to win the public vote for president despite the fact that he made some major mistakes in my opinion during that election.

1) His major mistake was to ask Joe Lieberman – a senator from PA - to be in the ticket with him as the VP.

He could instead have placed in the ticket as his running mate some governor or senator from a state that was not in the bag for the Democratic Party. (someone from a red state)

2) He distance himself from former president Bill Clinton during his run for president in 2000 – and that turned out to be another major mistake.

But still, to this day the perception in the US is that Al Gore won the presidential election in 2000 - until the US Supreme Court selected George W. Bush to be the new president.

As I mentioned before “Perfect Timing is Everything” and the US presidential race in 2008 is available to Al Gore to take it - if he really want to be president of the United States.

Al Gore is a fool if he thinks that he will have a better chance to be elected US president in the future than the chance that he has today.

First the new democrat presidential candidate to be elected in 2008 will be in office until 2016 - and at that time most people would careless about old Al Gore – at that point most people will remember of Al Gore just as the fellow who lost the 2000 presidential election – a long time ago.

Now if he realizes that this is his “Perfect Timing” – he has everything going for him right now including:

1) He will get the Nobel Peace Prize in December of 2007.

What credential would be more inspiring for the American people than to be able to elect a new US president who has just received the Nobel Peace Prize? – and have him follow right after the “Bush Warmonger Administration”.

2) “Global Warming” is the hottest subject around the world today – and what an honor for the United States to elect as its new president –“Mr. Global Warming Himself”.

3) Al Gore is not only respected here in the United States – he is also respected around the world – and the next administration will inherit a major mess around the world with the compliments of the Bush administration. The new president will have to do a major repairing job around the world to the collapsing reputation of the United States everywhere.

4) When Al Gore is elected US president he can ask former president Bill Clinton and also former president Jimmy Carter to help him in two major efforts:

A) The reunification of North and South Korea.
B) Peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

In my opinion, if Al Gore does not have the foresight to see that this is his chance to become US president – then he does not deserve to get another chance in the future.

It is now or never for Al Gore – and he better make up his mind very soon if he does not want to miss this great opportunity – perfect timing is everything and I hope Al Gore understand that.

Al Gore has everything going on his favor right now and I am sure that he can beat any Republican candidate in the race of 2008.

In my opinion, Al Gore has the US presidential election of 2008 in the bag – if he wants to be president of the United States.

And I am sure that as soon as Al Gore announces that he is running for the presidential race of 2008 - he will become immediately the Democratic Party front runner.
