You may be typical of suckers Trump feeds on... You may be well intentioned, hard working, poorly informed, and naive -- exactly the cohort of the American Population Trump was referring to when he said "We love the poorly educated." You may be one of those highly susceptible to Trumps fabrications and lies.
The vast majority of those children held in cages by the Trump Administration were too young to understand the nuances of U.S. immigration law; they can be no more held accountable then you could have been when you were that age. Their parents, together with their children, in desperation after walking hundreds of miles under difficult conditions, entered the U.S. legally seeking asylum when they presented themselves to U.S. border agents at official crossing points. The U.S. is a party to international law that permits this. Traditionally, according to standard U.S. practice, the parents would be separated from the children only briefly, and both detained for relative brief periods. The parents would assigned a Court date to present their case for asylum, given an ankle bracelet for tracking, and then released into the U.S. on their own recognizance. Until their court dates many would be cared for by family members already, legally in the U.S. Others might be housed by various shelters. Well over 90% would present themselves to the court on schedule.
It was the Trump Administration's innovation to start caging the children separately from the parents, stop keeping track of which parents went with which children, deport some of the parents without their children, move some of the children without their parents knowledge, and retain some of the children and some of the adults in cages under inhuman conditions.
This was done, without specific authorization by Congress, under Trump's authority at the direction of Stephen Miller with the intention of sending a message to those who might be tempted to seek asylum in the U.S. The message sent was that those who might be tempted to seek asylum in the U.S. would suffer the same fate as those that went before them.
This is the regime you are supporting. If you care about children and the humane treatment of detained persons, you will speak out against these horrible practices of Trump's Administration, rather than closing your eyes and ears and pretending you know nothing of these atrocities. Let me add that treatment of asylum seekers has got only slightly better because of watchdog groups like the American Civil Liberties Union, which went to court to force the Trump Administration to release the incomplete information it had regarding the locations of detained adults and children. Whereupon, in response to court orders, the Administration released only bits and pieces of the information it had, forcing the ACLU to return to court time after time.
