abandoning iraq = insane

Quote from ElCubano:

I would agree with Gekko if in fact that was our mission; but it was not. Gordon our mission ( and i know what you are saying believe me I do ) was to get rid of terrorism, not free the Iraqi people. Why not free the Cuban people?? There has been human rights violation there far longer than in most places...... But believe you me, I am glad that we may be giving the Iraqis a fighting chance at democracy; but again it was not our mission..
there were many reasons for iraq. although WMD/compliance with the agreement saddam made at the end of the first war was one reason, our country did make the case that saddam's regime tortures people before we went to war. these were all factors.

america can't go around freeing all people around the world at once. maybe if the rest of the world was alright and cuba was the only country left with problems, we'd help the cuban people more. if the usa government felt cuba was also a threat to usa + their human rights violations, maybe they'd be more of a priority than iraq right now...who knows.

i'm sure our government asseses problems around the world and has to make difficult choices. also, some governments are more co-operative than others. if saddam wouldn't budge through democratic measures, maybe war is necessary. not all countries we have problems with need to be bombed.

Cuba doesn't have massive oil reserves.

Not correct...if that had been the case we would have invaded years ago..remember Saddam has been torturing his people for many moons now....That was not the reason, but may have been a way of justifying....

P.S. Cuba has no Oil......

Gordon - why should someone who couldn't give a rats ass what happens to the Iraqis be forced to pay for the reconstruction of the country? The US government is supposed to defend the interests of the American people, not foreigners living half way round the world. If you want to help them then by all means go ahead, but do it on your own paycheque, not someone else's.

Quote from AAAintheBeltway:

Gordon,

I agree totally. Pulling out now in the face of casualties, as much as we all hate to see them, would just increase our enemies resolve and determination to inflict casualties onus next time. In a sense we are still paying for the Somalia debacle and the Beirut debacle in the 80's. Our enemies are convinced that we will cut and run if we take too many casualties.

Who are our enemies and why do they hate us?

we will rid the world of the evil-doers."
