from what I recall, chemo wasn't completely horrible for my mother... so I would advise your friend to take the chance and undergo chemo... all it will do is buy them time...
my mom fought cancer for close to a decade and to be honest what kept her going was her positive outlook even though she knew it was a death sentence and a matter of time before death would claim her... never once did she lived her life as she had cancer... so it is not so much about risk with your friend, because in reality there is only one outcome... he/she will die, the question is how soon... as such, support them on taking a chance, and make sure they make their peace with all and accept the odds are low... and if it works out, every day that passes should be considered a blessing and lived as such..
my advice to your friend as she undergoes the therapy... eat right... juice up(something that helped mom was a mix that we did with pineapples, spinach, green apples, and a few other fruits, it was refreshing and helped her combat a lot of the side effects of chemo and all the meds given they will destroy the body slowly), drink quality protein (labrada and ON platinum), ingest aminos (musclemeds amino decanate), increase your fiber to double the norm from fruits and also aid with metamucil, and lastly polyvisol for the iron bump he/she will need and hydrate a lot (lots of water)... if she can get oxygen, opt for it as well and use it while sleeping... it will all help with being able to withstand the chemo and feel less fatigued from the cancer... and the other thing... remain active... walk 30-60 minutes a day, and exercise all your muscles.. force your body to remain active.. but the most important thing is a positive mind... I have friends who died faster from cancer because they gave up mentally first...
as to your trading... honestly, I dont know why people think they need to be super rich to be happy... is that 20% return providing you with all you need and more? is trading in that manner allowing you to spend time with your family, sleep at night without concerns, lead a stress free (as much as possible) life? then if that is the case, continue that way and stop worrying about not having more millions... if your method is can be scaled, then just raise capital (either from equity in your home, or wherever else) and increase your multiplier to increase your amount given the same ROI... and be happy, life is short... live it...
anyhow, my 2 cents... for whatever is worth... the above is what I will do when and if I get cancer... but the end, after the options have been exhausted, will be as I said for my #3.... the patch to ensure i feel no pain and can still function, and when the end is really near, sleep until my heart stops and I cease to exist.
best of luck to your friend, and to you... let him/her know my best wishes and thought are with him/her...
Quote from SimpleTrades:
Startdust, I wish this were a hypothetical question, but it isn't. Someone close to me is suffering from acute myeloid leukemia. I am trying to help them through the process as best I can. Obviously, this person will need to decide what is best for themselves. Fortunately, the chromosomal strain places this person in a moderate category that gives her a fighting chance with Chemo (25% cure rate, 25% chance of death from treatment, 50% chance of achieving remission, 50% chance of relapse after remission )
It made me think about many traders who I strongly believe made their cash because they seized that all or nothing option (Dead, and feeling the pain all the way to the moment of death, or fully cured).
However, that is not my approach to trading. I keep grinding away: about $200/month for every $1000. I keep resisting the temptation to get more aggressive, and keep wondering if my current safe approach is a mistake. Certainly, my way is comfortable. I sleep well. Almost never lose. However, its going to be a long wait for great riches - much to the chagrin of my dear wife.
Its funny to see my advising this person close to me who may soon die from their illness. I am advising them to take that aggressive all or nothing approach, yet here I am being so safe.
Maybe none us really knows how we will play that final trade until we are actually right in the middle of it.
