I am not on here all the time because I have other things to do. I wont be on here again for a little while after this post.
I wanted to come back to this thread to talk about death and aging which is an important topic and the whole point of this thread. I did not start this thread to make you a competitive athlete, but make you think on how to live a better quality life and last a little longer.
Here is my observation of what people usually die from. No, I did not conduct a study, but this has been my personal observation over time.
0-40s- Accidents(usually automobile), Drug/Alcohol related incidents, Random Violence and freak medical occurences that could not have been foreseen.
40s-60s- Heart Attack
60+- Stroke, emphysema, cancer and just about any sickness you can think of.
From age zero to 40, you can avoid death most of the time through simple common sense and not doing certain things. There are freak medical occurences that I have witnessed such as a 35 year old lean man have a stroke or a 33 year old woman athlete have a brain aneurysm. Unexplained medical occurences that make you wonder...
From 40 to 60 is the time you really have to be mindful of your heart. Between ages 35-40, you have to focus more on cardio then just weights. How you are in your late 40s is how you will enter into that second part of life...
From 60 and above, then you will get hit with all kinds of things...
I noticed that most people who retire seem to pass away within 5 to 10 years. So if you retire, then you should get yourself at least a part-time job or do volunteer work. If you dont, then as I pointed out earlier you will not get the average 3 miles of walking per day.
No matter how much you exercise you will not be able to stop the aging process. General McChrystal is the best example. He has been in the Army his entire adult life subject to physical tests and he runs 7-8 miles a day. He does look lean and in-shape, but he could not be mistaken for being 20. There is no question that with his grey hair and wrinkled face that he is one of the older men.
So if you want to live that much longer its not too hard.
1) Make good common sense decisions erroring on the side of safety.
2) Dont drink, drink&drive or have anything to do with drugs.
3) Stay as active as you can. If all you can do is speed walking a few miles each day, then do that. Keep on your feet, dont sit down. Dont worry about becoming a competitive athlete...worry about just making the distance.
4) Live for today, dont put things off or you will look like General McChrystal. You might be in shape, but you will get old.
5) Weight is the key ingredient to a quality life and longevity. The Metlife weight tables demonstrate that a lean man wins the race in the end. Dont eat at restaurants. Eat small meals at home. Avoid salt, sugar, anything oily or fatty. Avoid fast food places all together. When going to the store, purposely look at the labels of everything you buy and think. When sitting down to eat, you get one small plate and you do not go back for seconds. When drinking coffee, you go for Splenda. If you can grip your stomach or cant see your dick then you are probably overweight.
6) Your body consists 60% of water which is needed for various processes. It wont hurt to consume at least 8 glasses of water per day. It will also help you in a way of not developing painful stones. There wont be any warning of that so its good to drink now. More water will help burn off additional calories. A small amount, but it will add up at the end of the week. If your urine is yellow, then drink a few cups of water. Your body doesnt have a red warning lamp to tell you its dehydrated. There are no alarm bells. So you need to keep drinking throughout the day.
7) There are no miracle pills or herbs that will help you. Thats all snake oil and doesnt work. Focus on running and exercising. Focus on being hydrated and eating right. There is no pill that is going to make you healthy. In fact, all that stuff will probably make you sick.
Finally I want to end this post with this. The five things that will surely contribute to your demise are 1) a lack of happiness 2) stress 3) getting upset 4) a lack of self-esteem and 5)insecurity. The more unhappy you are, the more stress in your life and the more you get upset the shorter your life will be. You will age quicker and have more mysterious illnesses. I know a lot of people who would have lived at least 10 more years if they were more happy about life and a higher self esteem. Being happy will add more years to your life then anything else so the key to life is to stay positive even in the most negative situations.

Interesting points.
As an older guy, what would you say are the main things you would do differently if you were 25 again?
