Boy did it ever go off the rails.
I see the argument has mushroomed this morning. Here is a little video that talks about some of the costs of drug abuse. Of course, PT will latch on to the legal costs but it is the other costs that are the problem with making hard drugs legal. And, as you state, once addicted abuse/rehab is a revolving door for most addicts.

Another thread gone off the rails. Here's some perspective form a person who has used, abused and been addicted to alcohol and drugs, and spent some time in a cell. That person would be me.
Jailing abusers and users is a waste of time and money. Rehab can be a waste of time and money as well, but it does need to be offered at least once. Weed should be legalized, but crack? There are no recreational crack users. DUI first offenders should be given nothing but a slap should they blow less than .12 or so. Higher than that, you're f'n drunk and need to be punished. Second offenders is a whole different story. They need severe punishment which includes jail time and loss of license.
It's an up hill battle all the way. Most will never rehabilitate, most will never really care. After nearly 27 years of experience working with drunks and addicts all I can say is everyone deserves a chance, maybe two, but most will fuck it up. It's just the nature of addiction.
