NEW YORK -- U.S. crude-oil inventories in the week ended May 8 fell for the first time since February, according to data released Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Energy.
Crude stockpiles fell by 4.7 million barrels to 370.6 million barrels, the department's Energy Information Administration said in its weekly report. That compared with an average forecast of a 1.3-million-barrel build in a Dow Jones Newswires survey of analysts.
Gasoline stockpiles fell by 4.1 million barrels to 208.3 million barrels, compared with an average survey estimate of no change.
Distillate stockpiles rose 1 million barrels to 147.5 million barrels, compared with analysts' forecasts of a 1.3 million-barrel build.
Refinery use fell 1.6 percentage points to 83.7% of capacity. Analysts had expected a 0.1-percentage-point gain.
