And remember China were just implimenting the new rule where all phones have to be identified by a face or be disconnected.
I did not know that, though I do recall hearing stuff about portable numbers etc. Do you have a link for that, by chance?

Very odd.

These are Chinas 2 largest providers. Going back all the way to jan 2016, they've never lost subscribers until this year.

What's going on?

Not only is it not odd, it's completely expected. It would have been odd if subscriptions had not have been lost.

The reason is simple:
  • economic downturn - business slowdown / reduced consumer confidence;
  • many housebound (with wifi) during lockdown, so less need for cell phones.
Going back all the way to jan 2016

What happened in 2008/2009?
