Can I keep my Sharpe ratio higher then 3 for a second year??

Threads like this are huge circle jerks that greatly lower the signal-to-noise ratio on these forums. I still lurk here from time to time, but it's no surprise to me that some of the greats like RM no longer post here.

BBY BEST BUY....any thoughts? A BUY or not?

The price action looks like shit, friend. If you're going to buy this stock, don't do it here.

AAPL 520 break for upside reversal

You didn't update your chart, but I'm going to step in here... Engulfing candle with pretty solid volume on the day means that if you have an aggressive trading style, you can "cheat" here with an earlier entry. Can get better prices without having to wait for the gap to fill.

    Where to Learn to Trade?

LOL, lurker here had to pop in to respond to this. Millions come easier to someone who knows how to trade than pennies to someone who doesn't. Knowing how to trade and having a solid edge is better than having an ephemeral edge that may not work across market conditions. I wouldn't share the...

2nd try: what is easier, poker or trading?

Poker is much easier to become good at because the feedback cycle is so short. A hand lasts a couple minutes and then you can evaluate what you did right or wrong. Not always the case with trading, and it can take long periods of time before similar patterns and analogous cases arise that...

How necessary are quantitative skills in order to trade profitably?

It's not necessary for profitable trading (I myself don't use a heavy quantitative skillset in mine) However, I will say that I am an engineer by education and have always been strong with numbers and logical thinking. I think you'll find that though that many great traders have strong...

EXM - EXcel Maritime Carriers (low P/BV, P/E, high EPS)

Because the entire shipping group is weak and that makes EXM a total dog. Sad, but you need other buyers other than yourself to push up price.

    Don't feed the trolls fellas.

When you "optimize" yuor system, do you emphasize short term, midterm or long term?

I dunno, Sharpe Ratio is an extremely poor metric of evaluating a trading algorithm. When you optimize your system you should try to optimize it across as much data as you possibly can get, otherwise you are curve-fitting.

    Help Starting a Fund

Thank you everyone for the responses! It wasn't my intention to create a heated debate so I apologize if my original post was vague. So we're definitely looking to go the friends & family route and keep expenses as low as possible. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this thread has mentioned...

    Help Starting a Fund

So I'm starting a small fund operation with a partner and was wondering if I could learn the experience and insight of any fund managers who have gone down the route of starting up their own fund and doing their own administration & accounting. I understand there is a thread started by...

    I'm shorting AAPL and GOOG

RDT, you responded to my post with an arcane post of your own but failed to answer my original question -- how are you even on the position when you were stopped out once for a few point loss, then reshorted again with AAPL now a couple points higher than your price?

    I'm shorting AAPL and GOOG

How are you even on a trade where you were stopped out for a few points, and then reshorted so that you are down another few points? If you, sir, deal only in "facts", then how does that math work? And don't bother saying you booked some profits -- that makes you a hypocrite on top of your...

    Fees for prop firm

50k BP? I'm not a fan of the structure. Even though the payout is good, the fees are too high relative to your BP.

    negotiated option commissions

traderum there was an error in your sentence causing confusion. I believe you meant an options contract is 100 shares of the underlying equity, not a contract is 100 options (which makes no sense)

Worst crisis since 1930 and we only had 1 down yr?

The market is not agreeing with your views. You expect weakness due to "the worst crisis since 1930", yet the market is going up. It is telling you something. (Hint: It's not weak.)

    I've never traded before

From experience... If you have the discipline to follow the plan you have created and you don't dabble around, you should be able to figure it out within a year and a half, give or take several months. Understand the T+3 settlement rules may make it tough for you to put on very short term...

How many of you do a "homework" every single day?

I do, but it's not as time consuming as you would expect. I have about 50-100 stocks that I trade well and exhibit what I look for, and I just go over them after the close. Usually at least half of them aren't even in play. Journaling is a different story though. I write down something every day...
