You offset income (i.e. gains) with losses. As I originally posted :) If you reduce your income, you generally reduce your tax. If you've not done this as a trader, then I suggest you file amended returns, and get the money you're owed :)

I've been carrying losses forward for about 15 years now. In fact, Turbo Tax does it for me automatically. Unless he declared a bigger loss than he had, or smaller gains, then I don't see what the issue is. Offsetting gains with losses is normal.
