    Starting a Hedge Fund

... from what I understand, what you propose is a violation of securities laws. A lawyer told me that many investment clubs are likely in violation because they really only have one decision maker for trades. I believe the key is who makes decisions, not if there is consensus or not.

    Tradeing the ES (On Topic)

Not looking for an explanation of how you trade but I do have a couple of questions. Do you enter at the market, with a stop, or with a limit order? And, in your experience, which way is best? Also, do you use protective stops? Thanks

3dog, Try keeping track of MFE as well. I have found that with some types of trading it can help to take profits at a certain level and MFE can help with that. Goes against "letting your profits run" but it may help to smooth your equity curve, which allows more risk to be taken with each...

    Starting a Hedge Fund

I am not looking for a confrontation either (although you seem to continue the debate until cornered). However, you hold yourself out as an expert on the industry, hedge funds, etc, and then you throw out comments like the one I previously cited. If you are so wrong (I believe) on this, how can...

    Starting a Hedge Fund

Don Bright wrote: "why would a good trader choose to give away most of their profits to investors" If the assumption is that a hedge fund manager is good, then it follows that the hedge fund manager is making a profit. So, in that case, the hedge fund manager is making 20% of profit made...

Bo, I understand your position sizing methodology, but have a question. What if a trader has multiple positions to choose from? It is relatively easy to position size futures, but with stocks a trader runs out of available equity. For example, I am looking to buy a $25 stock, have a $10,000...

    Starting a Hedge Fund

Gene, I think your costs are reasonable, I was just thinking the low end of your range. Someone had posted you were too low, so that is more what I was replying to. Also, I didn't have any problem with your posts. I was referring to others.

    Starting a Hedge Fund

I don't agree that the costs are in the $75,000 range. My reply was to Don Bright because I do not agree with what he says in his latest post. However, since you brought it up, the original post was: "My question to those of you who have dabbled in this is about the software and...

    Starting a Hedge Fund

I am not as knowledgeable as Don Bright, but I know a person does not need $100 million to start a hedge fund and, I believe, there is no licensing needed either. As far as keeping the profits themselves, I have seen a number of hedge fund managers on the Forbes 400 etc, and have yet to see a...

Why Optimization Won't Kill My System and Will It Work In The Future?

dottom, Thanks. Was just curious because TR was the only other platform I had heard of regarding the severe slippage test. One other question, is Wealth-Lab resident on your computer or do you access it online? Thanks

    Money from others...

vikana, The way I understand it (please, anyone correct me if I am wrong) is that if you start an investment club, but you are the only manager (as opposed to all sharing the duties) you could be in violation of securities laws. Now, if everyone is a friend or family member and not solicited...

    Money from others...

BigEd, Thanks for the reply. Is it your understanding that if the people in the LLC or LLP have not been solicited (ie. are friends and family) then no registration is required with the SEC, even if the fee structure is that of a hedge fund (2%/20% or simlar)? Thanks

    Money from others...

Would the arrangement to manage money for family and friends constitute some type of entity that must be registered with the SEC? Or, is there a certain threshold that must be met in terms of $ size or other before it must be registered? Thanks
