Why Is The Obvious Not So Obvious?

Most people assume, that to make money trading, you have to get in on the turn. When price is falling all they need to do is get in at the bottom. Some will try and predict in advance when it's going to turn (surely it can't go much lower), and often end up catching a falling knife. Even if...

Why Is The Obvious Not So Obvious?

Probably not but it doesn't stop an awful lot of people trying. :D It would certainly be one heck of a market anomaly if it was possible.

Why Is The Obvious Not So Obvious?

Yes because neither you, me or anyone else can see into the future. At any given point in time, price can do anything. You might think you see a swing low but you can only be certain with the benefit of hindsight.

Read this post, then pull up a chart for the S&P for the period he's referring to. https://www.elitetrader.com/et/threads/why-is-the-obvious-not-so-obvious.151802/page-11#post-2340900 The majority were looking for a long entry but that wasn't the "obvious" thing to do. ;)

Why Is The Obvious Not So Obvious?

Obviously to capture the entire move, you'd need to buy at the point of the swing low. But you can't possibly know it's a real swing low, as opposed to a fake, until it's already gone up quite a bit. It's all very frustrating. :D

What would constitute the perfect entry? It was alluded to earlier by Mr Ed. 1. price moves in your favour right from the get go 2. you can put a very tight stop behind it, without getting stopped out, making the risk as low as possible If there was a way to identify such entries, with a high...

    5. The best party to join is one where you have proof that eveyone is happy. IMHO these were the biggest giveaway in the thread, especially no. 5.

https://www.elitetrader.com/et/threads/why-is-the-obvious-not-so-obvious.151802/page-86#post-2395593 I'm going to repost something that riskfreetrading posted quiet a few pages ago. Posted by riskfreetrading on 04-08-09 05:38 AM: Obvious but not obvious: 1. The root of success/failure is...

Why Is The Obvious Not So Obvious?

This thread does that to you. And maybe it is intended by certain participants. However, I don't think nysestocks was being disingenuous in their reply to #853. It's not like they gave a thumbs up to many posts. You have to be a bit of a Sherlock Holmes to decipher the genuine clues from the...

Why Is The Obvious Not So Obvious?

A method that works can lose money on an individual trade because, of course, not every trade can be a winner. No method is 100%. But if you keep doing it, it will make money over time. For it to be worth the effort, though, it has to be a superior method which beats the market by a very wide...

Why Is The Obvious Not So Obvious?

Haven't been here for a while but I see folks are still struggling to get it. The obvious prerequisite to successful trading is obvious when you think about it. You need a method that actually works. Imagine if you were cooking steaks for the first time. No matter how good the beef is, or how...

Why Is The Obvious Not So Obvious?

Very sorry to see JS go. He may have been a bit sharp at times but I, for one, appreciated his directness. It's partly though his encouraging words that I am seriously considering giving trading another go. I won't describe the approach I'm contemplating because I don't want any feedback, good...

Why Is The Obvious Not So Obvious?

Some trend followers claim they don't predict but, as you say, arguably that is just semantics. The fact is, whenever you place a long (or short) bet it is because you think price will be higher (or lower) at some point in the future. To achieve profitability in the long run, you either have to...

Sure, comms add up, but what I meant was most blown accounts are caused by big losses, not comms.

Why Is The Obvious Not So Obvious?

My 2c worth... Decide on an amount of money you are willing to blow. (One month's paycheck or whatever) Deposit this amount, and no more, in a trading account. Don't use leverage or trade on margin. Maybe stick to stocks and ETFs. It's harder to trade a small account due to comms but this is...

Well, losing 80% of my capital was pretty dumb. :D

Why Is The Obvious Not So Obvious?

Thanks J_S. You have opened my eyes. :) I now realise, all this time, I have been looking for the wrong thing. I was seeking confirmation from others that I was on the right track, whereas I now see that I need to plough my own furrow. The thread has been very helpful though. Never again will...

Why Is The Obvious Not So Obvious?

There was a time, a while back in this thread, when things were starting to seem a bit clearer to me. Lately though it's become a lot less obvious.

Why Is The Obvious Not So Obvious?

J_S, a belated thanks for the above and your words of encouragement. I didn't get the password but daytrading isn't really my cup of tea. If/when I do get back in the saddle, like you, I will trade individual stocks using only one chart. In my case it will be stocks from the UK FTSE-350 and a...

Why Is The Obvious Not So Obvious?

Can any sleuths out there deduce which important fact NY was alluding to in trader3cnd's post? "You did however mention one very important fact about trading, that most will have no clue about, yet, it is so obvious that it is not so obvious."...
