Quote from Maverick74:
Little bit of game theory here. If you were the jury, knowing that your life will probably be at risk the second you return to your normal routine, if you are going to acquit him, would you do it promptly and piss off the black community by saying basically, sorry, you lose or would you let it drag out so that you give them the impression that this was a really difficult decision? Think about it. This jury is going to take a VERY long time if it's an acquittal. If guilty, the verdict will come back very fast.
Quote from AAAintheBeltway:
>>I don't like the third option, the acquittal, either, because the precedent would be set for any maniac with a gun to stop me anywhere, question me, and kill me if I attempt to confront him (or perhaps even If I attempt to flee).<<
I don't get this.
Do you really believe that if trayvon had simply asked why are you following me, then explained that he was staying nearby, there would have been any problem? Moreover, there is no evidence that Zimmerman stopped him or questioned him at all.
If your idea of "confronting " someone is to start a fight, then yes, you are taking a big risk, no matter what the outcome.
The only precedent that likely will be set is that young black thugs will feel even more entitled to terrorize white neighborhoods. They have the backing not only of the usual race hustlers but the state and federal government.
Quote from JamesL:
Since there seems to be an interest in this case on the federal level ("my son") I would expect some type of federal hate crime charges leveled if the jury chooses not to convict. It seems that based on testimony presented in the trial, they were just laying the foundation for this being a racial incident (how many times have we heard during this trial that Zimmerman was profiling Martin) which I think qualifies under Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009.
Quote from PiggyBank:
as far as i know, it is NOT a crime for a private citizen to profile. That aside, they have to PROVE that he profiled martin, i don't think it can be done.. i would like for holder to try though.
Other words for profiling = common sense.Quote from peilthetraveler:
Proof Zimmerman didnt racially profile him.
Does anyone in their right mind think Zimmerman would've follow Trayvon Martin if he was in a suit & tie and carrying an umbrella?
Lets go further. Would he have followed him if he was a 70 year old black man? Would he have followed Martin if he was a black woman who looked like she just got back from church? What if it was 5 year old black child? If you said "No, he wouldnt have followed any one of those" then it obviously was not about race. It was about some punk kid with pants hanging off his ass and a hoodie covering his face as if he was going to commit a crime. Obviously Georges senses were right about Martin though. Its been proved Martin was a drug using, violent thief. If you dress like a thug/criminal, its pretty evident that you ARE a thug/criminal.
Quote from Grandluxe:
The most they should find him guilty of is illegally discharging a firearm in public, punishable by:
Up to twelve (12) months probation and/or
Up to a $1000 fine
