It wasnt as bad as I thought. From what I heard, I thought Charlie had said something truely inappropriate or was intoxicated.

It appears to me that he was probably stalling maybe because the story he planned on showing did not pan out like he thought. He was probably unprepared and ad-libbing something to kill for time.
