I believe the primary motivation behind this shooting is “social leverage”.
By social leverage, I mean the ability for to amplify one’s action through media creation of an politically charged issue.
A sick loser is able to “be somebody” in world view by performing an attention getting act. These sickos probably see themselves as martyrs.
This YouTube attack and probably some school shootings are connected to this mentality. The FBI will likely look deep into the physcological motivations of these shooters. If the FBI concludes that the way media covers issues like this is a contributing cause in these shootings, would it be reasonable to ask the media to change the way they present information?
We do know about “copycat” crimes. I not saying the media shouldn’t don’t cover significant events, but rather it should consider avoiding going over-board on coverage of an issue or attempting to create an excessive emotional public reaction.
