free-think-er n. A person who forms opinions about religion on the basis of reason, independently of tradition, authority, or established belief. Freethinkers include atheists, agnostics and rationalists.
No one can be a freethinker who demands conformity to a bible, creed, or messiah. To the freethinker, revelation and faith are invalid, and orthodoxy is no guarantee of truth.
How do freethinkers know what is true?

Freethinkers are naturalistic. Truth is the degree to which a statement corresponds with reality. Reality is limited to that which is directly perceivable through our natural senses or indirectly ascertained through the proper use of reason.
Reason is a tool of critical thought that limits the truth of a statement according to the strict tests of the scientific method. For a statement to be considered true it must be testable (what evidence or repeatable experiments confirm it?), falsifiable (what, in theory, would disconfirm it, and have all attempts to disprove it failed?), parsimonious (is it the simplest explanation, requiring the fewest assumptions?), and logical (is it free of contradictions, non sequiturs, or irrelevant ad hominem character attacks?).

he also left out deists. they are the only intellectually honest form of christianity. thomas paine and many other founding fathers were deists.

Deism is defined in Webster's Encyclopedic Dictionary, 1941, as: "[From Latin Deus, God.Deity] The doctrine or creed of a Deist." And Deist is defined in the same dictionary as: "One who believes in the existence of a God or supreme being but denies revealed religion, basing his belief on the light of nature and reason."
What is the basis of Deism? Reason and nature. We see the design found throughout the known universe and this realization brings us to a sound belief in a Designer or God.
Reality is like a big elephant and we are like blind men touching it and comparing notes about what we percieve.
I depend on several sources, other people...and note their perceptions. I'm not affiliated with any source, like a club. I welcome new sources of information that I feel is based on honest perception, and compare those to my own experiences/viewpoint...and others.
I look for corroborating info from uncorrelated sources.
For the most part, people are honest about what they experience, but may not be interpreting the experience in accord with reality. I try to compensate for that.
I also assume most people are honest when they report an experience...but again, interpretation is the key.
I also accept reports that alledgedly come from off-planet, other realm sources. If none of it makes sense, I put it on the back burner to simmer until other free associations make in possible for me to grasp it.
I also favor practical experimentation. If someone says do this and that will happen...and if it isn't dangerous...and if I think there is a great benefit...then I'll allow them to sell me on the idea of experimenting with methods of achieving that quality.
In this way, my perception of the elephant is building rapidly.

Not sure why Jewish wasn't included in poll and also;
Christians have Hebrew roots & all of old/new testament was written by Jews plus both have same relatives= Abraham & Sarah.
