Your favorite Indie rock bands

Hey all,

I'm wondering what kind of indie rock/college bands you guys are into these days. Lately I've been listening to indie rock more, and my favorite bands are gomez, the flaming lips, radiohead, ween, and a couple others...

recently i've discovered luna, wilco, and guster, which are fantastic, so i'm wondering what you guys listen to?

thx,
-dung

People try to take my soul away, but I don't hear the rap that they all say
They try to tell us we don't belong, that's alright, we're millions strong
This is my music, it makes me proud, these are my people and this is my crowd

[szie=5]These are crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy nights[/size]
These are crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy nights

Sometimes days are so hard to survive, a million ways to bury you alive
The sun goes down like a bad bad dream
You're wound up tight, gotta let off steam
They say they can break you again and again, if life is a radio, turn up to ten

These are crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy nights
These are crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy nights

These are crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy nights
These are crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy nights

And they try to tell us that we don't belong
But that's alright, we're millions strong
You are my people, you are my crowd, this is our music, we love it loud

Yeah, and nobody's gonna change me, 'cos that's who I am

These are crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy nights
These are crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy nights

These are crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy nights
These are crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy nights

These are crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy nights
These are crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy nights!

The one time I saw Kiss (Dr. Love era) they were at their height of fame. The concert was so loud that afterwards I thought my car speakers were blown because they sounded fuzzy. It then took me a second to realize it was my EARS that were fucked up. But to this day I'd rank 1977 era Kiss as one of the best live acts of all time.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs (Fever to Tell)
Modest Mouse
Radio Head
The Strokes (Room on Fire)
Deerhoof
Stereolab

These are some of the bands which I've lately been listening to.

The best album this year is by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It gets better every time one listens to it. Of course you've got to have the right kind of taste.

Classics:

T. Waits
Television
Butthole Surfers
Pixies
Joy Division
Sonic Youth
Richard Hell and the Voidoids
Meat Puppets
Iggy Pop
Fugazi
Buzzcocks
Ian Dury
Big Black

If you are just discovering Luna and Wilco, I would suggest you check out Galaxy 500 - Deans first band before Luna, and check out Uncle Tupelo, which existed before Wilco. Great bands, and name dropping them will help your indi cred.

Best,

Mike

Wlico is probably the worst band on that list. I simply can't stand them. Trite jesus lyrics. I hope, for your sake, you're not into them. The Flaming Lips are quite trite too, but at least I can enjoy a song, or maybe two at the most, of theirs.

There is this new English band called Ferdinand .... (I don't know the last name). It's supposed to be good. But who knows, 19 out of every 20 "indie" albums I buy are complete dogshit.

Would you like me to post my dogshit indie group list?

Too bad that is what you are getting to hear now days. These are great times for Indie Pop, and electronic music. Truly a golden age. I get to hear so much great stuff I cant keep up with it anymore.

Have to sort of agree with some of your Wilco critiqe, but Uncle Tupelo with trite lyrics....um...dont think so. And the last two Lips albums where fantastic examples of psychodelic at its best, along the same vein as Mercury Rev at its peak. That style is never about the lyrics, but sound...Good luck in search for good music, because it is out there like never before.

And I don't remember many names. But here are a few.

Bad music:

Pavement
Death Cab for Cutie
Trans Am
God Speed you Black Emperor
Spiritualized
Decemberists

Additional okay to good music:

Bikini Kill (okay)
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (okay)
Neutral Milk Hotel (amazing)
Vaselines
Sparklehorse (amazing)
Le Tigre (okay)
