The interesting part is that Charter schools have greatly expanded in our state. however the city of Durham has been bitterly opposed to opening new charter schools in the county/city. Even when Raleigh Charter (one of the top 10 high schools in the nation) attempted to open a school in Durham they opposed and sunk the effort. So Durham moves on without many charter schools and the bottom ranked "urban" school system in the state.

This being said -- the Durham City Council members supported the toppling of the confederate statue in Durham and the Antifa protest. The Durham police have publicly criticized the Durham City Council for supporting Antifa chaos and hate.

'But Major Paul Martin with the Durham Sheriff's Office says these leaders should not be sharing their personal views because it causes interference in applying the law.

Martin says:

"The fact they are making a statement, and at the same time, they control our raises, our budget, even the sheriff's raises. I am concerned about the political interference. I am concerned that everybody should be treated equally under the law. Just because you agree with someone's underlying political leanings doesn't mean you should try to obtain favors for them."'
 
Not a surprise that school districts, especially those politically charged or poor performing, are protesting the forming of Charter Schools when it represents an end to the monopoly they've had forever. Who in their right mind would choose to go to a school run by a bunch of crazies like this if they could go somewhere else that was based on a performance model?

Are you OK with vouchers being used to send students to Islamic schools that teach a very fundamental form of Wahhabi Islam (funded out of Saudi Arabia)? Because most of the vouchers in North Carolina in a trial program have been used for these schools.

The majority of vouchers (in some states) are spent on religious schools rather than non-religious private schools. At some point this becomes a separation of church & state issues because public money is being used to fund religion.

I think that if the issue is approached in a black and white manner that could be true. It is also true that millions of people are sending their children to private schools- religious or not- but still paying a huge share of property taxes, state taxes, and federal taxes to the public school system. Let's skip right past the routine argument that everyone should contribute to public education whether they had kids there or not- because I agree with that.

Nevertheless, the state does realize some cost savings from not actually having to do anything for a student, eh? So a fair share should be made available to help the parents and students. Schools are always going to be overwhelmed with debt. There are teachers unions, there are endless decisions to build schools with flat roofs that always need to be replaced, so on and so forth. The fact that schools need all the money they can get is not a satisfactory basis for denying some relief to taxpayers who are already subsidizing the schools by not sending their kids there. Giving parents back money for services that are not provided to them is not supporting a religion.
