Young, qualified and unemployed, Spanish protesters express anger at economic pligh

Quote from Ghost of Cutten:

Haha. A PhD is political 'science' is not well-qualified, it's a worthless skill unless you want to go into government, political analysis, or a think-tank.

Mass-mailing 1000s of CVs is idiotic. 90% of jobs are not advertised, and there is no possible way you can tailor 1000 CVs. Companies don't want a cut & pasted identikit CV, they want you to know about the company and be a good fit there. How can you be a good fit for 1000 places?

The way to get jobs is to identify your skills, talents, and interest, then network like crazy, research your target field of work like a maniac, and then speak to *everyone* in that industry with hiring power. If necessary, offer to work for free or do work shadowing, work experience etc, just get yourself known and in the door, then work your nuts off, people will notice if you are good, word will spread. Keep doing that and let it be known you're looking for a position. Even in times like this, it is very difficult as an employer to find excellent, motivated, talented staff. If you are good then you can generate more in revenues than it costs to employ you. If you can do that, then companies will always hire you once you have proven it to them, because you add to their bottom line today, and have potential to add more tomorrow.

I guarantee you that this woman has not done a proper job search, like most she just assumes that mass mailing CVs to everyone is the way to go - well guess what, every other unemployed person out there is doing the same.

Finally, if employment is so bad right now, then start your own business, instead of assuming other people will pay you a hefty sum each month just because you can write a 4 page CV. Instead of marching in the streets because no one is giving you a free ride, how about some creative thinking, how about some old-fashioned elbow grease. What about the unskilled refugees from African and Latin America, they are far less intelligent and educated, they face class and racial prejudice, they seem to be able to survive in Spain, I'm sure this privileged woman can too.

As far as starting a new bussiness in Europe It is a bad place to start. Everthing is basically locked up by old royal money. They won't let anything new start up unless it gets the "blessing" Her best chances are in South America or the US. Working as a specialist contractor. I really feel bad for people who chose a career path with no positive outcome. I haven't been working for anyone for the last 7+ years. I am still sticking to the market and trading because I don't trust the corperate office nonsense and backstabing that goes on in the workplace. I hope that woman finds something.
There will a larger and larger unemployed labor pool in both the US and Europe. If someone in power had half a head they would start a public works project on a grand scale.

What you say is true for big money, like starting a tarding corporation, telecom business, etc. Not for a small business like a restaurant for example.

In todays WSJ H.Mansfield describes the poor choices made by students in selecting a major. The bad choices are made "because they are attractive and easy" he says.
The humanities lke sociology, politcal science (mine also), philosophy worked fine in my era when a degree was an entrance to most jobs. But it didn't take long for me realize that they were of limited value and mostly bull sh#t.
I then knew a marketable skill was needed and my liberal arts
education wasn't the ticket. I was interested in home building and got into construction(my grandfathers work)and want on to learn design, architecture, surveying, and where every nail and dollar went into building a house. Over years I attained the success i was looking for and my wife and children shared in it. The road taken had a fork and I got lucky with the timing and the times.
A naive choice was corrected with common sense:)

cheers john

you never operated a successful restaurant.

convertibility-
"One of the better things about this site is how one-sided (and wrong) people are. Things are not that bad."

you must know a lot of civil servants or highly successful individuals.
a 9% unemployment ate which does not include those who have given up looking for work is terrible. the US is basically broke because of the budget deficit. California has to release prisoners because of inhumane conditions. the education system produces illiterates with $100,000/ yr. baby sitters ie teachers in the major cities

check the $US vs. the $C or against the Brazilian Real,
America is getting poorer by the day. It cannot pacify Afghanistan or Libya or even Iraq for that matter.

a repeat of the meltdown of 2008-2008 with the same players is a possibility. the monetary based tripled in recent years which raises the possibility of runaway inflation.
"things are not that bad" you must be mr. polyanna.
