"U.S. Factory Output Rises

U.S. factory activity grew in January at its fastest pace in almost seven years, the Institute for Supply Management said Tuesday. The American private trade group said its index of manufacturing activity rose last month to 60.8, from 58.5 in December.
The sector has expanded for 18 straight months, and January's reading was the highest since May 2004. Any reading above 50 indicates expansion.
TD economist Martin Schwerdtfeger said the report suggests the U.S. economy has started 2011 on "a solid footing, after closing last year with renewed strength."
The manufacturing sector bottomed out at 33.3 in December 2008, the lowest point since June 1980. Rising industrial output has been a key driver for the U.S. economy since the recession ended in June 2009.
The ISM reported that new orders grew to 67.8 points from 62.0, the strongest showing since the recovery began in mid-2009. The index of export orders jumped to 62 in January, from 54.5 the previous month.
"The sharp acceleration in new orders, export orders, and employment are positive indicators of continued strength going forward," Schwerdtfeger said in a commentary.
But not every sector of the economy is booming. Construction spending fell 2.5% in December. Overall, construction spending fell 10.3% in 2010 to the lowest level since 2000."

Another example of a false dichotomy is when you see a homeless person begging for change and he says "well, at least I'm not robbing people" as if begging and robbing people are the only 2 choices in life.
