You hate facebook? Too bad...you will eventually get an account.

Quote from amazingIndustry:

Lol, so you set up your kids with an FB account of which you knew the password so you can monitor their online activity? How creepy. Or would you beat your kids if they turned on the privacy switch within their face book account and changed passwords so you can't peek anymore? How can you even believe that the pictures you wanted to share only with your "friends" will never be archived, analyzed, in order to push better targeted advertising? And now you close all your email accounts? Oh right, your AOL account is safe, good to keep that one. LOL, I love conspiracy theorists. They are such funny creatures...buhaaa, the internet boogeyman is coming after you.

Dude how old are you? No I did not set up their account. They have been FB users way longer than me. I'm was just an FB friend to them.

Maybe I need to close my ET account also as seems we have some creepy folks here too.

Haha, its getting better by each post you make. So you had your kids add you as friends so that all the other kids could see you on your kids contact list? Wow, that must be fun. Kind of reminds me of one Criminal Minds episode. You are quite something..."hey mom, I chatted today with my friends dad on FB, he is quite creepy". ;-)

the problem is that more and more services are now will show you promotions, offers, whatever ONLY on facebook. you gotta be a member to see it. truly feels like either monopoly or discrimination. or both. fuck those companies, fuck the facebook..fuck them all. all those snitches..yeah..sell me something. timing never been better..when gas is between 4 and 6$ per gallon and my shitty currency close to all time low..good luck with that

I created an account with a fake name and nothing in it -- no friends, interests, etc., just so I can access stuff that facebook won't let me access without a facebook account.

that is complete bollocks. In any serious industry, if the employer cares at all then quite the opposite: You look immature and childish if you feel compelled to share with the rest of the world every step you take, every restaurant you try and your obvious inability to connect in the real world but instead having to make virtual friends. It's weak minded people who truly believe they miss out by not being on a social networking side.

I myself am not a member of a single networking side and I do not miss out on anything nor has any employer every asked me about it. I am very happy I do not leave a huge online trail behind me, something that may badly bite you in the future.

Comparing cell phones with Facebook is ludicrous. Cell phones provide convenience that is why people have them. Same with smart phones. Facebook and co steal your time, make you look like you have self assurance issues or at least a lack of confidence to rise above the crowd and admit you do not need another time waster in your life

Facebook nation.....haha........ a very silly big time waster correct.

Wrong wrong, wrong . Yes today it looks like this is the way things are going to be. First of a lot of folks from pre-facebook generations will NEVER have an account. Secondly when all the young people will have an account, FB will stop being cool. FB could really become unfashionable one day, it will be "so 2012" or whatever .
Also even if a majoritz of people have an account, there could be a point to which too much internet use kills the internet.
In other words, users will be saturated, thez will have an account but never use it, so traffic and revenues will drop.
FB is NOT the juggernaut people think it will be.

peilthetraveler,

I sort of recall you have a habit of talking your book, but your call is not only likely to be wrong money wise but morally as well. Facebook is a real threat to society and saying you should have an account is like saying you should do drugs, or spend your time playing vid games instead of reading for ex.

Quote from peilthetraveler:

I was at a seminar last week and they said something very interesting. We were learning marketing techniques and they asked how many people do not have a facebook account. About 40 or 50% raised their hands. Then they asked, how many of you plan to NEVER get a facebook account and about 25 or 30% raised their hands.

Then the guy said "Now, those of you still holding your hands up...how many of you said 15 years ago, you said you would never get a cell phone?" About the same amount held their hands up. Then he asked "and how many of you still don't have a cell phone" And only 1 person raised their hand (in a room of 300 people).

Although many of you do not want to admit it, if you are not on facebook, its almost like not having a cell phone. If you dont have a facebook profile, there are many employers nowadays that are going to think there is something wrong with you, or that you are hiding something. Although today its still accepted by that its ok to not have a facebook profile, maybe in 5 or 10 years, it will be unacceptable. You will be looked at the same way we look at people that live in the mountains without TV, electricity or the other comforts of life. Yeah, maybe its ok to live that way, but dont expect anyone to give you a job or that it will be easy to integrate back into the world should you get tired of living that way.

I deleted my facebook account when they started insisting on a phone number. Last thing I want is to be overwhelmed by telemarketers on a site that is financed through advertising.

I'd rather buy a domain name and create a website for myself if I want to self-promote.

if you haven't read "crossing the chasm", do so now. short read, a staple book in marketing.

I can live a perfectly normal life without Facebook. It is not a service that improves the quality of living. Quite the opposite, actually. The lack of privacy is appalling.

thought I was signing up for an online poker game and got hoodwinked into opening up a face book account. I've done everything to delete it, reported as spam, etc. There is even another thread on ET about it, and finally the face book emails started dropping off, and then out of the blue, just this week I get a msg from facebook that an old girlfriend wants to be friends. Funny, because that's not what she told me that last time I pissed her off.

I don't know If I'll ever be completely free from facebook.

(and there really never was an online poker game)
