It can be predicted. For instance teens are not getting their drivers license at 16 anymore. Many are waiting to 18 to get their license. Why? Because life is different now than when we were kids. We used to get our license at 16 and go driving around all friday & saturday nights to hang our with our friends. Today, teens sit at home on their computers and interact with their friends. $4 gas is partly to blame for this, but many teens just dont see any point in going out when they have free entertainment at home called facebook.

But the great thing about facebook is that you get hit with ads that you might actually WANT to see. For instance, if you write that you have an interest in trading, an advertiser can target you by that. On facebook an advertiser who is holding a trading seminar in los angeles can say "ok...I only want to target males between the age of 35-50, who have an interest in trading and who live within 50 miles of Los Angeles." If you are someone that is interested in that seminar how would you find out about it otherwise? You would have to drive by a specific billboard on a street maybe...or have the radio turned on at a certain time of the day. You might miss that seminar because you didnt happen upon the ad by chance.

I dont know about you, but I hate see ads of things that I dont want. It works in everyones best interest if you only see ads that you might want to buy their product.

there seem to be a lobby forming to try enforcing this kind of stuff using fb. in this environmet, would not be surprised.

however, most of the times these stories turn into pure fantasy and prices fluctuate accordingly.

So far I am nicely ahead in social poker game.

Actually sometimes I do feel like just deleting my facebook account because it sometimes disrupts my productivity. But sometimes I also feel like getting rid of my cell phone too because I get tired of people calling me. But of course, if i get rid of either, I'm basically taking myself off the grid and it's like I'm living in 1990.

And you definitely do not want to be that guy that's stuck in the past as we all know "that guy"
 
If I had a choice to hire between an employee that has a facebook account, and one that doesn't, I would go with the one that doesn't.

Facebook is just a massive spam machine. Mark Zuckberg gets a little older and then some other teeny blooper pop out with the newest social networking for the teenagers. I have seen it many times before.

Really, everything out there is a spam machine. Even this site, elitetrader, is a spam machine. There are ads on every page. Whats so different about ET's marking methods and facebooks? Nothing.

that is complete bollocks. In any serious industry, if the employer cares at all then quite the opposite: You look immature and childish if you feel compelled to share with the rest of the world every step you take, every restaurant you try and your obvious inability to connect in the real world but instead having to make virtual friends. It's weak minded people who truly believe they miss out by not being on a social networking side.

I myself am not a member of a single networking side and I do not miss out on anything nor has any employer every asked me about it. I am very happy I do not leave a huge online trail behind me, something that may badly bite you in the future.

Comparing cell phones with Facebook is ludicrous. Cell phones provide convenience that is why people have them. Same with smart phones. Facebook and co steal your time, make you look like you have self assurance issues or at least a lack of confidence to rise above the crowd and admit you do not need another time waster in your life

You will be looked at the same way we look at people that live in the mountains without TV, electricity or the other comforts of life. Yeah, maybe its ok to live that way, but dont expect anyone to give you a job or that it will be easy to integrate back into the world should you get tired of living that way.

glad I do not have a need to apply for whatever snake oil you have to sell. What a bs. You are a weirdo if you stand out? Sounds very new to me. Let me tell you something: Most every employer of highly paid jobs that require an innovative and sharp mind set look out to people who beg to differ and take the right to disagree and do things different. But just in case you run a McDonald's shop I agree with you, I would also hire a dummy who just fits in and does the job instead of someone who may appear to be different from most other idiots.

you make a good point: It looks its the desperate and poor who are in urgent need for bargain hunting who may have to be member of such sites. I consider myself wealthy and independent enough to not to have to garbage pick coupons on GroupOn and co. But I understand there are others out there...

Me too, and I will consider the one without the facebook account.
At that seminar, after the cell phone comparison, I would have gone away and asked my money back.
