You hate facebook? Too bad...you will eventually get an account.

Quote from peilthetraveler:

I was at a seminar last week and they said something very interesting. We were learning marketing techniques and they asked how many people do not have a facebook account. About 40 or 50% raised their hands. Then they asked, how many of you plan to NEVER get a facebook account and about 25 or 30% raised their hands.

Then the guy said "Now, those of you still holding your hands up...how many of you said 15 years ago, you said you would never get a cell phone?" About the same amount held their hands up. Then he asked "and how many of you still don't have a cell phone" And only 1 person raised their hand (in a room of 300 people).

Although many of you do not want to admit it, if you are not on facebook, its almost like not having a cell phone. If you dont have a facebook profile, there are many employers nowadays that are going to think there is something wrong with you, or that you are hiding something. Although today its still accepted by that its ok to not have a facebook profile, maybe in 5 or 10 years, it will be unacceptable. You will be looked at the same way we look at people that live in the mountains without TV, electricity or the other comforts of life. Yeah, maybe its ok to live that way, but dont expect anyone to give you a job or that it will be easy to integrate back into the world should you get tired of living that way.
Some people will believe anything. You are one of those people.

Quote from Ripley:

If I had a choice to hire between an employee that has a facebook account, and one that doesn't, I would go with the one that doesn't.

Ditto. Most "Facebook-ers" are just sheep... succumbing to peer pressure.

I've don't have a Facebook account, no cell phone, no texting device, have never twitted...

You should hire someone like me... that is, if I cared to work for anybody... :D

I don't have a facebook account either. I just don't get it. And twitter...why?
And I'm getting where I'm forgetting my cell in my car or house more and more often and being glad I don't have it on me. Getting old, bullshit, not me.

all you really need is one of those chains you put around your neck and you press it when you've fallen and can't get up. (Could have used one of those on a Saturday night when I was in college.)

My mom has one, I think I'll borrow hers, she's doing pretty good here lately.

that aint saying much, USA as I knew it yesterday is gone.

About the only thing that seems to never change is my memory of how it use to be

I live in Denmark, things has changed so much here.
A bunch of new strange laws and regulations each day, weird politicians that struggle with their own logic, an ignorant Prime Minister (Helle Thorning Smith) that seems like a puppet controlled by an unknown group.
And even worse, as we're a part of the Eurozone we are also subject to the ESM (european-stability-mechanism) which will destroy our future and place our descendants in deep bottomless debt.

Welcome to the future

Don't live in denial. If I am looking at hiring and my choices are between 2 different people, and i cant decide because they are equally qualified...I'm going to facebook them.

And all you'd see in my profile is a small version of my profile picture (which doesn't even show my face) - I've adjusted the privacy settings so you can't see anything else.

Quote from rew:

I created an account with a fake name and nothing in it -- no friends, interests, etc., just so I can access stuff that facebook won't let me access without a facebook account.

+1. I've got a real account and fake account. I use the fake account whenever facebook says some app wants access to my information. I also use the fake account to test how my real account's privacy settings are working, and also to see what exactly my friends can see (what i like, comment on, etc).

Quote from southbeach4me:

Why anyone would want hundreds of other people knowing when they are going to a movie, taking a vacation, or about to take a dump is beyond me. I deleted my acct last summer and have never looked back, good riddance !!!

I'd say 30% of my usage is to see friends' photos and their statuses, but the other 70% is like an RSS feed. I have "liked" various news pages, my sports teams' pages, other products that I want updates on, etc. Now I can just go to facebook and get all my news and updates, instead of having to go out to a bunch of separate sites.

A few quick thoughts...

1) As already mentioned.. a business is opening itself to a lawsuit if they deny employment or payment because a person doesn't use Facebook.

2) Isn't a person who doesn't use their personal Facebook account on the job more productive than someone who does?

3) FYI, many companies are using non-Facebook social networking services (such as Yammer) for internal company use.

Comparing Facebook to mobile technologies is apple to oranges.
