Roads built by a private individual can be shut off to anyone they do not want using their roads. If FedEx built all the roads, they could deny their use to UPS, severly resticting UPS's ability to prosper. They could deny their use to private citizens, restricting their ability to get to the grocery store or beach. If we all pool our resources together via a central government, we can allow the use of roads to almost everyone, commericial users and private citizens alike.

If you can't see the value of basic scientific research and understand that private enterprise would NEVER do all this stuff and this is certainly a place for the government to work, then there isn't much point to trying to convince you. You're too far gone.
You could have competing roads/highways, and if need be, the govt could intervene through law, at no cost. They could pass a common law that as long as the people using these privately built interstate roads are paying customers they must be allowed access. For example, if the pay method were tolls, then anyone willing to pay the toll can use the road. Also, it would be less profitable to build a road and restrict its usage, why would a private company do that?

I'll make this real simple for you, the things you listed that have value would eventually be developed privately. Billion dollar particle smashers seem really cool and all but why do we need them? What do they provide for us? Also grants for 'experiments' about what make mice fat and the like are fucking stupid and a waste of money. You are the kind of guy that cries we spend too much on the military (right now that's true), BUT if WWIII breaks out I'm damn sure you'll be happy with all that spending. As a sovereign nation there is a need for defense.
Solutions to pressing needs have value and are pursued by those trying to make a profit. Attempting to catalog every celestial body in the universe seems like a fun hobby, but when the economy is contracting that project should be on hold, no? Or do u think we should be borrowing money we don't have to finance things we don't need? Next gen fridges that get rid of harmful coolant, oh wow lets borrow money to make that. Then we can sell them at some ridiculous price which no one will buy at and we will LOSE money on the whole endeavor. Federal money must be spent wisely, it doesn't belong to the politicians, and it isn't unlimited. If you don't get what I'm saying, it is you who is lost.
