Yet another multimonitor question

Please post how it goes as I have a Dell with that card (ATI), and I'm yanking it in favor of a couple G450's. I would like to see if you have OS issues before I do this though.

I have a Dell 4400 with XP home.

I would addd that the FAQ section of the Appian website has a lot of info on compatibility. Apparently S3 went out of the graphics chip business and as a result, anything running S3 chips lacks an XP update. I couldn't find anything useful on the microsfot site, although it's so disorganized I wouldn't swear there is nothing there. They do list several of the Matrox multi cards as compatible, but don't address any of the older pci single cards. It would be nice to know if old standbies like the millenium will work with xp.

For some reason I can only find hardware compatibility ratings
for Win2000 and ME on the Microsoft website. Do not see where
there is any XP combatibility pages? Am I looking in the wrong
area or what?

You might need to check with the manufacturer. When I bought a P4, Win2000 system, I'd planned to take the cards out of my W98 system and put them in my new one. Nope. ATI's drivers for my old cards would not work in Win2000... had to buy new cards.

Check this issue thoroughly before you install drivers. While it might not cause any trouble, it might too.... and possibly enough to make you reinstall your system from scratch.

The Appian site mentioned something that I was not aware of. Apparently the agp slots were changed at some point, perhaps whne the P4 came out, and the older agp cards will not fit in or work with the new slot. Anyone thinking about buying an older agp card should check this out.

I stumbled across this:

Call me a skeptic, but I hardly believe you can mix and match
these cards with each other. Perhaps Microsoft is talking about
using combos of individual card makers? If you can mix and
match all of these cards with each other that would be great.

Why wouldn't you be able to mix and match? If the drivers are certified by MSFT then they should work together. I used to work in MSFT support, and it's much more likely that any official combo will work together than not.

ATI 3D Rage II. Tried these cards and got nothing. The device manager recognized them but I got an error message that they "won't start". I'm assuming that means that they are not compatible with XP.

Can anyone tell me what the differences are betwen the various Matrox cards? They feature the G450 MMS and G200 as multimonitor cards, but the 550 is also offered in a dualhead configuration at a much cheaper price. I've found for trading purposes that just about any card that will drive the monitor is adequate.

All this attention to multimonitors is dangerous, because I've been working out in my head how I could put in a frame to hold three more monitors above the line of three that are currently running QCharts. That would rock, oh yeah.
