It all depends on where you live and what media you read / listen to.
Also, typically when police are looking for a criminal that's still at large (not captured)...the race is mentioned as part of the description with a picture if available no matter where you're living.
Simply, too many people develop their persona around stories in the media.
Think about that carefully, if I see someone consistently mentioning crime in Miami or the Miami area and rarely mentioning crime in different cities especially when the other crimes are worst... it's a good assumption that's where they're living to feel like every criminal trash in that area is impacting their life.

- Don't lose sight of the bigger picture. This is New York and any crime incident on public transportation, buildings in an unusual way...its initially seen as a potential terrorist act and that alone is why the media grasp onto the story so fast with heavy coverage, especially in New York.

- It's a sad way to live your life and it opens the door to being a racist simply because the media plays with your head and/or has a political agenda that's owned by people heavily involved in politics.
