UN denounces Israeli attack on its school in Gaza

The United Nations condemned the deadly Israeli air raid on a UN school being used as a shelter in central Gaza.

UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told reporters it was the fifth bombing of the same school in the Nuseirat refugee camp since Israel’s war on Gaza began. “We condemn all air strikes that target civilians and those that also target UN facilities,” Dujarric said.

“Our policy is clear: UN premises should never be targeted, nor should UN premises be used by any groups or any force from which to launch military activities,” Dujarric added. “UN premises need to be protected. UN premises need to be respected, and that is by all parties to any conflict.”

We’ve been reporting on an Israeli attack. The Government Media Office now says at least 18 people, including women and children, were killed in the air attack on a school-turned-shelter in central Gaza Strip.

The attack on the UNRWA school in Nuseirat refugee camp killed at least two staff working for the UN agency that provides relief to Palestinians, the civil defence agency added.

At least 20 people were wounded. It is the fifth time the shelter has been bombed by Israeli forces since the war on Gaza began last October.

Israel’s al-Jaouni school attack the ‘result of total impunity’
The lack of accountability that Israel has faced following previous attacks has enabled the latest massacre to take place at the UN-operated al-Jaouni school in central Gaza, Abdullah Al-Arian, assistant professor of history at Georgetown University in Qatar, has told Al Jazeera.

“This is the result of total impunity,” he said, referring to the strike. “We have become so desensitised to this level of atrocity [in] schools and hospitals that we forget that at the beginning this was considered something completely off limits.”

Al-Arian said Israel has been “testing the limits of what is acceptable” to the international community and escalating violence accordingly in Gaza.

“This is exactly how genocidal campaigns unfold,” he said.

Al-Arian added that the targeting of UNRWA facilities and staff was part of a broader attempt to delegitimise and criminalise the agency, which Israel sees as an obstacle to its goal of stripping Palestinians of their refugee status.

Sinwar just wants to save his own skin. He wants to trade the remaining hostages to in exchange for safe harbor -- a deal the terrorist leader is likely to accept.

I would urge Israel to proceed with the deal and send the terrorist leader packing so we can move onto the stage of re-building Gaza with Hamas eliminated as a governing entity.

Israel’s military continued to pound Gaza, killing 40 more Palestinians as international condemnation mounted over an Israeli attack that killed at least 18 people at a United Nations-run school, including six aid workers.

• UN chief Antonio Guterres reiterated his demand for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza following the attack on al-Jaouni school, saying the “horrific violence” in the Palestinian enclave “must stop”.
• About 25 percent of people wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza – at least 22,500 Palestinians – have “life-changing” injuries, according to the World Health Organization.
• At least 41,118 people have been killed and 95,125 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza. In Israel, the number of those killed in the Hamas-led attacks on October 7 is at least 1,139, while more than 200 people were taken captive.
