The MAGA speakers who preceded Donald Trump at his Las Vegas rally evoked religious language to describe their leader. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene compared Trump to Jesus, saying that the messiah was also “a convicted felon.”

“The Democrats and the fake news media want to constantly talk about ‘President Trump is a convicted felon,'” the congresswoman told the crowd. “Well, you want to know something? The man that I worship is also a convicted felon. And he was murdered on a Roman cross.”

At least 274 Palestinians, including dozens of children, were killed, and hundreds more were wounded, in the Israeli raid that rescued four hostages held by Hamas, Gaza's Health Ministry said Sunday. The Israeli military said its forces came under heavy fire during the complex daytime operation deep in central Gaza.

The killing of so many Palestinians, in a raid that Israelis celebrated as a stunning success because all four hostages were rescued, showed the heavy cost of such operations on top of the already soaring toll of the 8-month-old war ignited by Hamas' Oct. 7 attack.

The operation in Nuseirat, a built-up refugee camp dating to the 1948 Arab-Israeli war, was the largest rescue since Oct. 7, when Hamas and other militants stormed across the border, killing about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking about 250 hostage.

Scores of hostages are believed to be held in densely populated areas or inside Hamas' labyrinth of tunnels, making rescues extremely complex and risky. A raid in February freed two hostages while leaving 74 Palestinians dead.

Israel's massive offensive has killed over 36,700 Palestinians, according to the Health Ministry, which does not differentiate between civilians and combatants in its count. It said 64 children and 57 women were killed in the latest raid, and 153 children and 161 women were among the nearly 700 wounded.

In Gaza, medics described scenes of chaos after the raid. Overwhelmed hospitals were already struggling to treat the wounded from days of heavy Israeli strikes in the area.

"We had the gamut of war wounds, trauma wounds, from amputations to eviscerations to trauma, to TBIs (traumatic brain injuries), fractures and, obviously, big burns," said Karin Huster of Doctors Without Borders, an international charity working in Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital. "Kids completely gray or white from the shock, burnt, screaming for their parents. Many of them are not screaming because they are in shock."

The Israeli military said it had attacked "threats to our forces in the area," and that a special forces officer was killed in the operation.

Israel's military spokesman, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, said Saturday the hostages were held in two apartments about 219 yards apart. He said the forces moved in simultaneously on both. Rescuers came under heavy fire as they moved out, including from gunmen firing rocket-propelled grenades, he added, and the military responded with heavy force, including from aircraft.

Israel's Foreign Minister Israel Katz lashed out at critics of the operation in a post on X, saying "only Israel's enemies complained about the casualties of Hamas terrorists and their accomplices."

The hostages were held captive in civilian homes -- obviously the homes of Hamas members. One of the hostage keepers is a Pallywood propagandist for Hamas. Yes, the "media" in Gaza are part of Hamas, as are UNRWA. Additionally this was the home of the "journalist's" father, Dr. Ahmed Al-Jamal. These are the "civilians" being killed in Gaza by the IDF. Any questions?

The IDF has now confirmed that three freed Israeli hostages, Almog Meir Jan, Andrey Kozlov, and Shlomi Ziv, were held captive in the family home of Gazan "civilians," a report said on Sunday.

Rami Abdul, the chairman of the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, said that the organization's initial evidence showed the Israeli special forces used a ladder to enter the home of Dr. Ahmed Al-Jamal and his family.

Several of the family members were killed during the operation including 36-year-old journalist Abdullah Al-Jamal.

According to the Quds news agency, Al-Jamal was also identified as a staff writer for the U.S. outlet The Palestine Chronicle and was a contributor to Al Jezeera. The IDF found evidence of his contribution to Al Jazeera as well. Al-Jamal's wife was also killed during the rescue mission.

Meanwhile, Imran Khan, a senior correspondent on Al Jazeera's English channel published an Instagram post distancing the network from Al-Jamal, saying he was a freelancer in the past. Khan wrote, "The individual in question who was killed in the raid along with his family was, at one point, a freelance journalist. He has never worked for Al Jazeera Arabic or English."

The operation, during which the three other hostages were also rescued from a separate location, has drawn condemnation for the high alleged death toll on the Palestinian side. However, these criticisms fail to address the responsibility of holding captives in populated areas deep inside Gaza's residential areas.

Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor also failed to address why so-called "civilians" were in custody of Argamani, an Israeli hostage who was kidnapped along with her boyfriend during the Nova music festival on October 7. Hamas allegedly paid civilian families to hold Israeli hostages.

The organization also called for an investigation into claims that the Israeli forces used the U.S. humanitarian aid pier to enter. This claim has been denied by both the U.S. and Israel.

In response to this allegation, Palestinians have said they would boycott aid that was transferred via the pier, which only returned to operation this weekend after bad weather put it out of order in late May.

A journalist and a doctor were among the family members holding Israeli hostages in their home in Nuseirat in the central Gaza Strip, the Israel Defense Forces confirmed on Sunday night.

“Following checks by the IDF and the Shin Bet, it can be confirmed that [journalist] Abdullah al-Jamal was an operative of the Hamas terrorist organization, who kept the hostages Almog Meir, Andrey Kozlov and Shlomi Ziv in his family home in Nuseirat,” the military said in a statement posted to X.

“Abdullah’s family home held hostages alongside family members. This is further proof that the Hamas terrorist organization uses the civilian population as a human shield,” the statement added.

Gantz resignation will add to pressures on Netanyahu: Analyst

Dov Waxman, professor of Israel studies at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) has been talking to Al Jazeera about the potential impact of Gantz’s departure from the government.

Waxman noted that Gantz’s party, the National Unity Party, wasn’t part of Netanyahu’s original governing coalition, and his decision to join a unity government gave the coalition some measure of “domestic legitimacy”. With Gantz’s resignation, political pressure on the prime minister is likely to grow – both at home and overseas – Waxman explained.

“This was a government that was deeply unpopular even before October 7 but Gantz’s entry into the government, stabilised the government, and gave it some domestic legitimacy. Without Gantz and his partners the government will lose that domestic legitimacy and that will increase the pressure on Netanyahu to hold early elections. But I don’t think Netanyahu is likely to do that because he knows that, at least according to current opinion polls, his party would lose that election. He and his coalition partners are determined to cling onto power for as long as possible.

“Internationally, particularly in the West and the United States, Gantz was seen, rightly or not, as a kind of moderating influence – the so-called adult in the room – and I think that reduced some of the international pressure that Netanyahu night have faced. Without Gantz being there, I think Netanyahu is likely to face more pressure from the Biden administration and more international pressure because really, frankly, that is the only moderating influence Netanyahu will face now. So that international pressure I think is likely to increase.”
