Israel has no right to self-defense against Hamas militants in Gaza as an occupying power in Palestine, Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations said Wednesday.

Vasily Nebenzya used his speech at the special UN General Assembly session on Palestine to condemn Western “hypocrisy” over Palestinian civilian deaths amid their criticism of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“The only thing [the West] can muster is continued pronouncements about Israel’s supposed right to self-defense. Although, as an occupying power, it does not have that power,” Nebenzyasaid.

He cited a 2004advisory opinion by the Hague-based International Court of Justice (ICJ), which states that Israel cannot invoke the UN Charter’s article on the right to self-defense when acting against threats from occupied territory.

Israel argues that it has not occupied Gaza since 2005, when it withdrew military and civilians from the region. However, a number of international organizations say that Israel has occupied Palestinian territories, including the Gaza Strip, since 1967.

In a thinly veiled reference to his country’s 21-month invasion of Ukraine, Nebenzya said: “In other situations, [Western nations] call for the respect of humanitarian law, set up inquiry commissions and impose sanctions on those who use force as a last resort to stop years of violence.”

Nebenzya said Israel’s right to ensure its security “can be fully guaranteed only in the case of a just solution to the Palestinian problem on the basis of the well-known UN Security Council resolutions.”

“We don’t deny Israel’s right to fight terror, but fight terrorists and not civilians.”

Nebenzya slammed Washington and its allies for “remaining silent” as the civilian death toll from Israel’s bombardment in Gaza continued to grow.

Russia has called on Israel and Hamas authorities in Gaza to reach a cease-fire agreement and allow mediators to work on a diplomatic solution to the decades-long conflict.

Moscow maintains ties with both Israel and Hamas, which sent a delegation to Russia last week.

Russia is certainly the expert on being an Occupier. Based on this Russia has no right to defense against Ukraine.

US President Joe Biden has said he thinks there should be a humanitarian “pause” in the Israel-Hamas war in order to get “prisoners” out.

"Ooohhhhh, dear darlings (let me sniff your hair) I think buttercups, we should call a tea break, maybe sometime in the next, oooohhhh, let me think, aaahhh yes, a tea break in the next 10 years, what say you little peechy weechy peaches, and put down your naughty nasty guns oooohhhh, kiss kiss kiss my Jewish friends, I looooove yooooo soooooo much."

Very disturbing as I heard that in my head read in Barry Humphry's voice. :)

Ironic given Russians "we must preempt NATO" rationale to invade Ukraine

Secretary of State Antony Blinken will urge Israel to periodically pause its attacks on Gaza to allow hostages to be released and humanitarian aid to be distributed, White House officials said.
The officials said the pauses would be far different from an overall cease-fire, which the Biden administration believes would benefit Hamas by allowing it to recover from Israel’s bombardment.

Israel’s prime minister appeared to rebuff a U.S. call for pauses of its attacks on Gaza, saying any cease-fire must be tied to hostage releases.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's comments came shortly after the U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, traveled to Tel Aviv to urge Israel to agree to a series of “humanitarian pauses” to allow more deliveries of food, water and medicine into Gaza.

Türkiye said on Saturday it was recalling its ambassador to Israel for consultations "in view of the unfolding humanitarian tragedy in Gaza caused by the continuing attacks by Israel against civilians, and Israel's refusal (to accept) a ceasefire".

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan separately told reporters he held Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu personally responsible for the growing civilian death toll in the Gaza Strip.

"Netanyahu is no longer someone we can talk to. We have written him off."

Mr Erdogan said Gaza must be part of an independent, sovereign Palestinian state once the war is over.

Israel had earlier withdrawn all diplomats from Türkiye and other regional countries, its foreign ministry saying last weekend it was "re-evaluating" its relations with the country due to Türkiye's increasingly heated rhetoric about the war.

Mr Erdogan added Türkiye was not fully breaking off diplomatic relations with Israel.
