XP Home Crashing... Help??

Downloaded upgrade files for XP OS over weekend....

Computer boots and loads all programs, but after about 20 minutes, BSOD with message...

"Problem seems to be caused by the file LTMDMNT.SYS"

"Attempt was made to write to read-only file".

There are 2 of these files... one in "Service Pack Files" and one in "System32/Drivers".

Anybody have a clue?? TIA

you don't want to spend whole day debugging something that you have no clue, re-install prob take half a day or less, your choice.

try start, programs, system tools, system restore. restore to an earlier time.

I'll try that.

In the meantime, I think I know what the problem is (though not how to fix it)... Apparently the OS upgrade is causing something to try to write to a modem.system file which is in read-only memory. OS says, "that's not right", and shuts down.

Have reinstalled modem driver (though I doubt it does any good) and waiting for the 20 minutes to see if it smashes again...
