In a statement to the Guardian, the NSA said: "NSA's activities are focused and specifically deployed against – and only against – legitimate foreign intelligence targets in response to requirements that our leaders need for information necessary to protect our nation and its interests.

"XKeyscore is used as a part of NSA's lawful foreign signals intelligence collection system.

"Allegations of widespread, unchecked analyst access to NSA collection data are simply not true. Access to XKeyscore, as well as all of NSA's analytic tools, is limited to only those personnel who require access for their assigned tasks … In addition, there are multiple technical, manual and supervisory checks and balances within the system to prevent deliberate misuse from occurring."

"These types of programs allow us to collect the information that enables us to perform our missions successfully – to defend the nation and to protect US and allied troops abroad."

My computer crashed not too long ago. I wonder if NSA saved a backup of my harddrive.

On a somewhat more serious note. They probably have caught thousands of assholes looking at child porn and other disgusting illegal activity. They might as well forward to FBI.

And probably a handful of politicians in those thousands, and guess who won't be voting against the upcoming NSA surveillance retroactive legality bill? But why do they need to catch people with bad stuff, when they can just ask your ISP / email provider for your password and put the contraband there themselves?

Exactly, but the NSA has already stated it will not divulge that data to ANY other agency for the purpose of fighting crime.
 
Who they are spying on? Criminals and cybercriminals are operating freely, terrorists are just fine so what is going on?
 
Exactly what's the logistics on how to accomplish this??

Unless they have the cooperation of every ISP, how can you track someone's complete browsing history? Google can track you fairly well if you are logged in and doing things with their search or even general things (malware) but once you log out or clean your cache, they shouldn't be able know what you are doing.

Welcome to our country which is now a police state.

Those poor people got a visit because they were LOGGED IN to Google and Google does share their data with the NSA. If you don't log into Google, they can't "see" your browsing history.

Who else shares their data with the NSA ? Yahoo, Verizon and (this may be a stretch) Amazon. Think about it....everything you purchase online can be tracked.
