With the 2018 midterms months away and the 2020 presidential election cycle approaching rapidly, Democrats are considering how to improve their poor showings in 2014 and 2016. The party has been debating — sometimes heatedly — how to do this. Which voters should they target? How should Democrats target them?

But here’s what’s clear: White voters have been fleeing the Democratic Party, and that’s a big reason Democrats are looking to rebound from back-to-back losses.

Over decades, whites have steadily abandoned the Democratic Party

Whites have slowly but consistently moved away from the Democratic Party. These recent losses are on top of Democrats’ losses among Southern whites during the 1960s and 1970s after Democrats’ support of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Bill Clinton won 49 percent of the white two-party vote in 1996. Al Gore won 43 percent in 2000. John F. Kerry won 41 percent in 2004. Barack Obama won a slightly larger share in 2008, but then dropped to only 39 percent in his 2012 reelection bid. Hillary Clinton got the same percentage as Obama.

Obama was able to mask the Democratic Party’s weakness among whites by prompting record-high turnout among African Americans, as well as strong turnout from other Democratic-leaning minority groups. Hillary Clinton was unable to generate the same level of enthusiasm from racial and ethnic minorities.

We are in an era similar to just before the civil war. The same fear and resentment that got southern whites to fight for rich plantation owners to keep slavery is fueling the current movement on the right (these guys aren’t even close to republicans or conservative anymore, they’re just right-wing).

From Gingrich to Palin to Trump the devolution of the Republican Party has become so toxic with anti-intellectualism and jingoistic nationalism it has become a race based movement based on three thing 1. Anti minority rights 2. Guns and 3. Conspiracy theory.

All in all, though, 40% of any race, religion etc is not a bad place to be in electoral politics. It shows diversity. Whereas the current right wing movement is completely reliant on a single group.

All together, I’d rather be the left than right going into the future with the demographic trends and uptick in college degrees. As this country becomes more brown and more educated, it will squeeze the party of resentment from all sides.

These guys “picked the lock” getting Trump into office and now they walk around like they have super majority of support.

The Republican politicians wake up everyday from a nightmare about Trump tweeting something bad about them and go along with this mockery of a president and his clownshow to avoid any friction from his goonlike cult member followers and Russian trolls.

The party of “capitalism” was never about capitalism, they were about big business and trickle down nonsense. All of their anti government nonsense is bought and paid for by the super wealthy industrialists and 10% of the population that own 80% of the stock market. They’re not antigovernment because they truly think government does a bad job, they are antigovernment because they want to pollute and squeeze profits from privatization of public goods and services.

Why do you think Trump opened up ANWAR? He paying back the industrialists. Gorsuch is a shill put on the bench to destroy worker protections on the job.

Interesting observations but I disagree about today's right being analogous to pre Civil War southerners. I do agree that those poor souls were sacrificed by rich plantation owners who wanted to retain a low cost labor pool and offload the external costs on others. We're still paying those costs today, so thanks a lot guys.

If anything, today's new right is fighting a similar battle but on the opposite side. Globalists and the establishment pols they own are fighting for open borders, massive amnesties, etc to keep the flow of cheap labor and an expanding pool of big immigrant families, mostly on welfare, to keep buying Chinese crap from Walmart, etc. The so-called alt-right is fighting to maintain a country we can still recognize, which of course conflicts with both the globalists' economic plans and the dems' electoral strategy.

The next time you read a serious discussion of immigration in the MSM will be the first. Both sides, and the big money behind them, want more and more immigrants, the poorer and more uneducated the better.
