A few months ago Fortune(?) magazine had an article on how to calculate 'true net worth'. You first start with your family. If you are happily married, credit yourself $1,000,000. If you are healthy without any medical problems I think the credit was $1,500,000. The slant of the article was that if you were not in a positive family situation you would need at least $1M to offset the negative emotional effects and get to breakeven. If you were not healthy it would take at least $1.5M to offset the negative impact. (Even small health problems can 'cost' a lot.) The article had a table, based on research, suggesting the impact of many different situations on an individual's happiness.
