My position is that Israel is a very small country occupying less than 1% of the regional land with the population of 5 million people, the only civilized, developed and democratic state in the region. Israel is surrounded by 300 million arabs who are bent on wiping Israel off the map and driving the jews into the sea. These 300 million arabs get tacit support from 1 billion muslims world wide and quite a significant number of european anti-semites. Unlike any other country in the region and in the world Israel's very survival and existence is at stake and has been for the last 65 years. Israel has no plans to wipe another country off the map while all Israel's enemies have exactly that in mind, Israel recognizes their neighboring countries' right to exist (including Palestinians), they don't recognize Israel's right to exist, arab countries and palestinians constantly attack israel, Israel retaliates, with very few exceptions Israel has never attacked first. Israel has the capacity to wipe the entire arab world off the map but it has not and it won't, as soon as any arab country gets the capacity to wipe Israel off the map, there is very little doubt they'll try. During all confrontations arabs try to kill as many israeli civiliians as they possibly can, Israelis are trying hard to kill as few innocent palestinians as possible.

With all this in mind Israel deserves much more benefit of the doubt, understanding and sympathy than her enemies. There is no doubt that Israilis occasionally overreact, make mistakes or are heavy-handed in their retaliations. Personally I can't blame them, I know you can.
