Like him or hate him...I never really got to know him. I ended up working for WorldCo, though on the agency desk. But I'll never forget the interview I got when I did go in looking at being a prop trader.
Some stuffy kid was interviewing me, looked like an extra from the "Less Than Zero" cast. Walter walked by, the kid asks if he wants to come in. Walter sits down, lights a cigarette, offers me one, (normally I would be surprised, but his character almost made it ok for me to accept one...almost), then asks, "How do you make a good burger?" I'm like, "Excuse me?" and I look at the kid. Kid offers no help. Walter says, "A good burger. Tell me how you would go about making one."
I lean forward, realize what I'm in for, put my hands on the table, & dive into starting out with the leanest ground beed, but before doing anything, finely dicing a clove of garlic. I go through the motions, then the prep & grill. Walter sits back, smile ear-to-ear, and looks at the guy interviewing me & says, "Gar-lic...I like it." The kid throws in, "I would've gone with onions, myself." He looks at me with that squint & says, "I like it...Garlic."
As I said, I never took the offer. Found the one on the agency desk to be more attractive, more secure...guess I was wrong there, too. But, after 3 plus years, while I rarely saw Walter...I never saw that kid again.
