World Wide Power Grids Could Be Knocked Out

Quote from pspr:

Astronomers are predicting that a massive solar storm, much bigger in potential than the one that caused spectacular light shows on Earth earlier this month, is to strike our planet in 2012 with a force of 100 million hydrogen bombs.

"The general consensus among general astronomers (and certainly solar astronomers) is that this coming Solar maximum (2012 but possibly later into 2013) will be the most violent in 100 years," News.com.au quoted astronomy lecturer and columnist Dave Reneke as saying.

I guess the Mayans were right. We're all going to die in 2012. :P

This is serious stuff! This is a real possibility. Imagine no electricity for weeks or months. Anywhere! Fuel, food, water and everything we take for granted would become scarce.
The best thing you can do is build yourself a stockpile of food and water at the very least.
Oh, and there is water elsewhere in the universe and food can be grown or synthesized on other planets. IMHO

Solar power, wind power, live in the country, a whole house propane back-up generator, 2000 gallons of propane, 5 APC 3000 battery back ups, have 2 wells, one acre garden, 5 years of seeds, one acre stocked pond, satellite TV & internet, 5 stocked freezers, 1000 sq ft of dry & canned goods and a dedicated fiber optic line being installed in the Spring. Do I need anything else?

Guns and ammo, lots.

Jesu Christo!

That is only 2 buried 1000 gallon tanks. The whole house uses 750 gallons a year so I figure this would last 4 years if we conserve.

Chances of a direct hit from a GRB close enough to do serious damage are almost nil but a storm powerful enough to fry our power grids happened in 1859 and ice core samples show they're not that rare.
Quote from 377OHMS:

lol.

Another earth-killer that nobody worries about are GRBs (gamma ray bursts). They are extremely common in the universe, they are very directional (tight beam) and they are the most energetic events in the universe hands-down. If a real GRB hit the earth we would be incinerated before you could say "oh shit".

Its a barrel of monkeys out there, non-stop fun lol.

Now you're talking. You still need some guns and amo to protect yourself and your propery just in case solutions take too long and people start getting hungry.
