I don’t know if this is a “nowadays” thing. In a lot of ways this is what democracy looks like. At least among the non-elected population.

What I can say is we are in a more severe state of disagreement between left and right than at any other time in my lifetime.

Thomas Jefferson bought a newspaper and hired a corrupt editor for the singular purpose of slandering the Washington Administration while he was Secretary of State. It relentlessly attacked Alexander Hamilton without any regard for truth and reason.

Imagine if Trump bought twitter just slander Nancy Pelosi.

Abraham Lincoln was regularly depicted as a monkey, or black, or Jewish in many political cartoons.

JFK and MLK were maligned in the press and ultimately assassinated. MLK famously wrote letters from Birmingham jail in response to open editorials written by other clergy unfairly criticizing him.

People still give lofty speeches but to think that we got the civil rights act because of reasonable discussion isn’t accurate. We got the CRA by winning elections and mounting public pressure on the issue. Things were so bad people were getting killed.

Nothing you said, which is all true by the way, counters my point that today with social media all people want is hashtag names and phrases to throw out there and "represent" but there is no substance any more behind the words.... we are a social media idiocracy now. In Washington and Jefferson's days, those men wrote detailed speeches with their positions spelled out. MLK gave detailed speeches about human and civil rights that could not be misconstrued or used for other purposes.

In the 60s people marched and had rallies and spoke up and faced the consequences. Now we got social justice pussies who sit behind a computer.

Everyone who marched in 1960s wanted civil rights for all whether they were black or white and both marched.

In 2020 we have young pussies who want to loot and steal, take advantage to destroy, who pretend to be woke in favor of civil rights and run around screaming like tards all over shadowing the real people who truly want to march like in the 1960s. Only the tards have social media visibility, not the original type marchers so they are wshed away for the shit we see all over Politics section.

Black Lives Matter became a lazy hashtag that violent groups got to use and subvert the original message.
Blue Lives Matter was the response from people who missed the original point
All Live Matter were equally blind.

WHY? because of social media and hashtag actions and people believing whatever single incident or video was posted and then making it viral.

In 2020 it just takes one bad _____ to allow people to rip the whole class because that is how it is done in social media.

HRC called all GOP people deplorables
Trump called all people crossing illegally rapists and murders
People called a criminal getting shot by the police acceptable
Bad cops meant all cops were bad
Racists post a video of a crime by a black person and all Black people are bad.

This is what social media has done to civil rights and political discourse, lazy pussies behind a keyboard who don't think for themselves.

Now someone simply puts a # in front of somethign and claims a movement while sitting on their ass behind a computer.
