US surpasses 9 million coronavirus cases
Adds a million cases in a mere two weeks

There have been at least 9,007,298 cases of coronavirus in the United States and at least 229,293 people have died in the country from coronavirus, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

This is the fastest the United States has added one million new cases since the pandemic began.

Here's a look at the progression of cases:
  • Johns Hopkins recorded the first case of coronavirus in the United States on Jan. 21.
  • 98 days later, on April 28, the US hit 1 million cases
  • 44 days later, on June 11, the US hit 2 million cases
  • 27 days later, on July 8, the US hit 3 million cases
  • 15 days later, on July 23, the US hit 4 million cases
  • 17 days later, on Aug. 9, the US hit 5 million cases
  • 22 days later, on Aug. 31, the US hit 6 million cases
  • 25 days later, on Sept. 25, the US hit 7 million cases
  • 21 days later on Oct. 16, the US hit 8 million cases
  • 14 days later, today, the US hit 9 million cases
Seven other countries in the world have reported more than 1 million total Covid-19 cases:
  • India has more than 8 million total cases
  • Brazil has more than 5 million total cases
  • Russia, France, Spain, Argentina and Colombia have more than 1 million total cases

North Dakota has more Covid-19 deaths in comparison to South Dakota but South Dakota has more Covid-19 infections. Both know the hospitalizations soon follow the infections and then the deaths soon follow the hospitalizations especially when hospitals are at capacity (care isn't as good).

Also, North Dakota has a shortage of hospital beds...several large hospitals only had one bed remaining that's open for another patient. :mad:

Not sure how these hospitals had the entire summer to prepare for the 2nd wave and now are almost without beds for patients and its only the start.

P.S. I have close relatives in South Dakota, North Dakota and the governor of South Dakota is still downplaying it while some of the hospitals / ICUs have reached capacity.

The are numerous states and cities in the U.S. who now have to ship off their COVID patients to other states because they are out of ICU space. The entire situation shows a lack of preparation by states of something that was obviously foreseeable.

Another interesting note.... there has recently been speculation on how come the length of time for positive COVID patients to die has increased - some pundits have even seized on this as part of their "look it's not so deadly spew".

This increase is simply of a function of testing. In the beginning stages of COVID in the spring; most patients were only tested for COVID once they arrived at the hospital and they were already very ill - death normally followed three weeks later in the spring. Now COVID testing is widely available and many people test positive well before they must be hospitalized -- this has increased the time from positive test to death time to be 6 or more weeks.

In the beginning stages of COVID in the spring; most patients were only tested for COVID once they arrived at the hospital and they were already very ill - death normally followed three weeks later in the spring. Now COVID testing is widely available and many people test positive well before they must be hospitalized -- this has increased the time from positive test to death time to be 6 or more weeks.

American Medical Association slams Trump's claim that doctors are making money from listing COVID-19 as cause of death, as cases continue to climb

  • The American Medical Association hit back on Friday after President Donald Trump suggested doctors are inflating COVID-19 death counts for money, as cases continue to climb across the country.
  • During a rally in Michigan, the president erroneously claimed doctors are improperly citing COVID as a cause of death in some cases for monetary gain.
  • "The suggestion that doctors—in the midst of a public health crisis—are overcounting COVID-19 patients or lying to line their pockets is a malicious, outrageous, and completely misguided charge," the AMA said in a statement.
During a Michigan rally on Friday, the president lamented the increase in coronavirus cases, blaming it on an increase in testing, a claim his own testing czar has disputed. He then said doctors are improperly citing COVID-19 as a cause of death in some cases for monetary gain.

"You know, our doctors get more money if someone dies from COVID. You know that, right?" Trump asked the crowd. He characterized US doctors on the frontlines of coronavirus as saying, "When in doubt, choose COVID," for the cause of death.

The AMA, the country's largest association of physicians, responded to the accusation in a strongly-worded statement that did not address the president by name. The statement said frontline healthcare workers have risked their lives to fight the virus "because duty called and because of the sacred oath they took."

"The suggestion that doctors — in the midst of a public health crisis — are overcounting COVID-19 patients or lying to line their pockets is a malicious, outrageous, and completely misguided charge," Susan Bailey, president of the AMA, said.

"Rather than attacking us and lobbing baseless charges at physicians, our leaders should be following the science and urging adherence to the public health steps we know work — wearing a mask, washing hands, and practicing physical distancing," she added.

The statement also noted that coronavirus cases are currently at record-high numbers. According to The COVID Tracking Project, the US daily case number broke records again on Friday by surpassing 97,000 cases.

Ohio Republican Gov. Mike DeWine said Sunday that he follows the "very good guidance" given by White House coronavirus task members Dr. Deborah Birx and Dr. Anthony Fauci, as the voice of another task force member whose advice on the pandemic is at odds with the public health experts has gained prominence.

"You know, my contact at the White House has been Dr. Birx, Dr. Fauci. They have been aligned very, very closely. The message has been, 'We got to take this seriously, we got to wear a mask'," DeWine told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union" when asked about the role Dr. Scott Atlas, a controversial member of the task force, is playing in the pandemic.

"They have given very good guidance and, you know, I have been following those two as well as a lot of other infectious disease experts and people who we can talk to," the governor said.

The comments from DeWine come at a time when both Birx and Fauci, two prominent members of the task force, have receded from public view at the White House while Atlas has become one of President Donald Trump's closest advisers on the public health crisis, something that has frustrated the other doctors.

Atlas, a neuroradiologist with no training in the field of infectious disease, has misrepresented the effectiveness of masks and discouraged testing of asymptomatic people, even though most medical experts, including Birx and Fauci, believe it is a critical element of stopping the spread of the virus.

Atlas -- known for his out-of-the-mainstream views about the coronavirus, including the potential benefits of herd immunity -- made dubious claims in a 27-minute interview to RT, the propaganda network that had played a major role in the Kremlin's efforts to interfere in the 2016 US presidential election and later was forced to formally register with the Justice Department as an agent of the Russian government.

Both Birx and Fauci have stepped back in recent weeks from the public view they were in at the White House for the last several months, with Birx having embarked on a multi-state swing through the country in August, advising small groups of state and local officials on combating transmission.

Fauci, meanwhile, has been critical of the administration in media interviews, choosing his words carefully in order to avoid being blocked from giving more interviews. Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, told The Washington Post in an interview published Saturday that he has "real problems with that guy," referring to Atlas.

"He's a smart guy who's talking about things that I believe he doesn't have any real insight or knowledge or experience in. He keeps talking about things that when you dissect it out and parse it out, it doesn't make any sense," Fauci told the Post.

Yes. I have also heard that the death rate that is above the noise, the variability, of the death rate trend over time is caused by... something, it just can't be covid!
