My Windows boxes work well, and I spend far less time on administration, installation, and development than I did in 15+ years of working with UNIX. The cost of legitimate copies of Windows and Office is trivial for the functionality they provide for anyone that values their time.
I don't know what the WGA thing is about. I have legitimate OEM and retail Windows XP and 2K installs and have no problem with updates.
I dont know .... I used to think this in 2000. In 2005 (actually about 2003) things have changed. .... The LAMP stack is pretty fast for development - as is java if you are so inclined.
I would say its a wash unless you include license and admin costs and in that case the advantage is in the Linux LAMP camp.
