Windows 7

Does the new versions of Windows like Vista and Windows 7 need more memory than earlier versions and if yes, why so? Is the requirement of more memory justified or just for graphics?

Does anyone run a windows virtual PC XP 32-bit mode? I still have some programs that aren't compatible yet and was trying to run them in this mode (have win 7pro 64-bit).

I am getting constant BSOD with the "memory_management tag".

Took the box to microcenter and they charged me $150 and it still doesn't work!!! Online resources are crap and microsoft's own tech support (paid for that too) couldn't figure it out.

Can anyone help or point me in the right direction?

Windows Virtual PC - XP 32bit mode works fine for the applications I tried. The only complaint I had was that due to running dual OS's, the system ran slower.

Hey Prof-

Any thoughts on why I might be getting the blue screen memory dumps? All hardware tested fine and this only started happening after I downloaded virtual PC.

At this point I would take slow vs. not being able to run the system at all.

The laugher is I haven't even gotten to that point yet! The system craps out before I even get to downloading anything.

When I can get the system stable, I will be running Ninja 6.5.

I'm not willing to move to ninja 7 yet and really was hoping I could get this Virtual thing going. So right now there are no programs running on it.

Well, a couple of things.

I have a lot of friends that are using Ninja 7 that are error free.

That being said, if I were you, no matter how much of an aggravation it might be, I would format and reload the OS and then install the virtual OS before I load anything else. I have an HP and that is how I finally got a clean install.

I love Windows 7, just understand the the virtual OS is a leach.

That's exactly what I did. The box is totally stripped down. No anti-virus, no programs, nothing but IE.

I tried to do ninja 7 but too many complications with my code. I'm migrating away from Ninja shortly but I just need to get this going for the time being.

In general, every new version of Windows would require more memory and processing power to support because of the added new features. That's simply technology progression.

Memory is cheap these days. Compared to many years ago. I still have an e-machine box that had 256MB of memory running XP. But it is slow as an old dog. Today's price and technology, you can pretty much get 6GB memory for about $100.

It is not all about graphics. Though Windows 7 has more visual candies than previous versions. For example, what I found useful was the HomeGroup feature for sharing files among computers (they have this in previous versions too but HomeGroup seems easier to use).

In general the more memory the better. But you don't want to have too much memory that you really would never use. I found that 6GB is a good size (and affordable) for running Windows 7 and trading applications. I tried 12GB first and found that the memory usage usually stayed below the 4GB mark. I am running Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate edition.

PS: Another Win7 feature that I like: searching for documents on your computer. Very fast and thurough. Not new in Windows 7. But very easy to use. Has a "Google result list" kind of style citing 2 lines from the content of your document where your key words are found.
