Will US become a retirement paradise?

Quote from bluud:

talking about Ukraine

is anyone in here from Ukraine

I am planning on moving there

I haven't done anything yet ... I want to talk to a lawyer

but still it would help to get some ideas here

Is Ukraine a safe country to live in? Yes it is.

What is the annual life expense in Ukraine like? 20% of what you would need in NYC to survive.

How are schools and universities in Ukraine? Excellent for the most part. Much, much, much better than in the USA

How do Ukrainians treat foreigners? if you are white and from the western world - great.

I don't care about the income ... I'm not planning on working.

What is the main industry? Ni such thing any more.

Compare freedom in Ukraine with US, Japan and/or Russia
people are more sophisticated and while on paper freedoms in the US are greater, the close mindness o many in the Us will not let you be totally honest in most conversations. There political discourse is much more open.

Any other information regarding Ukraine would be appreciated!
Why don't you go for vacation there???? if i were you,I would fly to Eastern Europe and visit the following countries:

Czech Republic - very nice
Slovakia - nice but remote
Poland - nice but is getting expensive
Hungary - nice but the language will destroy you.
Ukraine - remote anf far away fom proper Europe, but still nice
Slovakia - very nice , next to italy in former Yugoslavia
Estonia - nice but really remote - has flat tax

The rest of Eastern Europe is either too weird like Romania, Bielorus are unfamiliar to me (Lithuania, Serbia, Moldavia). i would concentrate on the ones mentioned above.

Good luck!

Quote from Ivanovich:

Having lived in Russia for several years and having made many, many trips throughout the Urkaine, I can honestly say I have no idea why on Earth you would want to move from the West to the Ukraine - unless you're doing it because of the women.

Apart from that, be prepared for poor quality food, bad healthcare, corrupt government, bribing - well, everyone for anything, and low, low salaries.

Horrible driving conditions, bizarre and abstract legal system that changes on a moment's notice, difficult retail environment, expensive clothes. Don't have a car? Great, you can use the absolutely lovely metro in Kiev (if that is your destination) or the fantastic bus/vans that pick people up on the street. The busses will pick you up at an authorized stop. The vans, well you just flag them down when you see them and stuff in with the other 20 or so people in a vehicle made for 12. Or, you can hail a gypsy cab (anyone will pull over if they see you with your hand outstretched on the road) and hope you don't get robbed and thrown in the Dnipro once your throat is cut.

Long, cold winters (in comparison to most of the US).

Oh, and if you are asian or black, be prepared to be treated as an outcast at the very best - if they even let you live there.

As for speaking Russian, the younger kids are now learning Ukrainian. If you understand Russian, you can get by in Ukrainian, but for the most part it is a different language. As for English, no. Spoken in probalby 10% of the people - if that.

Sure, lovely place. Would like to build a summer house there, actually.

Thanks for the info ... also if you've been to Turkey how would you compare it with Turkey ... the closest (non-EU) country to Ukraine I've been to is Turkey that way I can probably get a better idea ...

Turkey is very different depending on where in Turkey you mean. for instance, Antalyia is much different than Istanbul which isn't the same as Ankara which is very different from a small town like Usak (dreadful). And apart from the bad roads and healthcare, I'm not sure that Turkey is comparable to the Ukraine. The women certainly are not.

I think you meant Slovenia above, which is next to Italy.

Forget those countries, he should consider Croatia. Look at these awesome views...

You have just described latin america bluud .... great place to live.

We came to BA from NZ almost 4 years ago and have never left.
We travel from BA to el caribe and have made a great lifestyle for ourselves.

you serious ... it's easier for me to move there but I can't convince myself that it's secure to live in latin america

Seniors from all over the west are moving to the Baja Peninsula in Mexico, just south of San Diego.

99,000 dollar condos, Wal-Mart and most U.S. companies opening up stores and medical clinics there. They are building massive enclaves that resemble Del Boca Vista down there.

...Panama City, too.

The senior citizens are voting with their feet en masse. They can't stand the inflation here anymore.

The big urban areas are dangerous, but most of the states and provinces are quite safe.
You need to do your homework first.

DR, CR and Panama are over priced at the moment.
Cartagena ( walled city area is safe)
Many areas in Brazil are OK, the Andean provinces of Arg are safe as is Uruguay (lovely country, the hidden gem of lat am)

Most of Chile is OK.
Peru and Ecuador hold no charm for me.

I would choose Panama, albeit more expensive, over Mexico. Mexico follows Napoleianc law, guilty until proven innocent, while Panama, I believe, follows Common Law like the US.
