Reagan, who came into office facing a situation somewhat as dire as Obama, having succeeded an unpopular Prez that left an economic mess behind, is the closest recent comparison to Obama. Take a look at his approvals, focusing especially on his first two years:

Obama at present, according to
Real Clear Politics, is sitting at around 56% - 38%. This is not materially different from Reagan, who peaked at slightly north of 60% in the first year, and bottomed, it should be noted, at slightly south of 40% in the early part of 1983, when the economy, not coincidentally, was also bottoming.
That was two years into his term. He was re-elected.
We're at barely six months into Obama's term. If he merely repeats Reagan's performance, he'll be re-elected. That gives him another year and a half to fix the economy, or, alternatively, have the economy fix itself. It also would be not at all surprising to see his popularity bottom at that time. It would mean precisely nothing to his re-election prospects.
The current setup is ideal for re-election: succeed an unpopular president, let the economy recover, win re-election.
I wouldn't bet against it.
